The Princeton Review is out on the "Party" and "Stone cold sober colleges". Top 10 rankings are:

"Party" schools

1. University of Texas at Austin
2. Penn State University
3. West Virginia University
4. University of Wisconsin-Madison
5. University of Mississippi
6. Ohio University
7. University of Massachusetts-Amherst
8. Louisiana State University
9. University of Iowa
10. University of California, Santa Barbara

"Stone cold sober" schools

1. Brigham Young University
2. Wheaton College (Ill.)
3. College of the Ozarks
4. Grove City College
5. U.S. Naval Academy
6. U.S. Coast Guard Academy
7. U.S. Air Force Academy
8. Queens College
9. Wellesley College

Would any baseball player (or parent) consider this during the college selection process?

Here is a discussion we had recently on the topic and this school didn't even make the top 10.

College of Charleston

I agree with TR that any school can be a party school - even Liberty (Baptist) JT Smile

To answer Fungo's question, yes it should be a consideration. I was told my son was going to a party school. My feeling is if the student is looking for a party, they will have no problem finding one, no matter where they go. Likewise, if they seek to be educated, they can do that as well regardless of the party school label.
CD,
Mine was told he was going to a party school also, and TR is correct!
The difference for us, was it going to be a big party school ( population 40K) or a smaller party school (population 16k).

Life is a bit freer for baseball players in the fall. There is no party option after you return in January. You don't have time for party option, between class and curfew, gym, practice, travel and being exhausted.

If you hear your son is going to attend a party school, remember one thing. Coaches are smart, many hold early saturday am and sunday am practices! The busier you are the less time for trouble!
I'll clarify my previous comments about it (whether or not a party school) being a consideration.

If UT were seriously after my son, I doubt it would be much of a consideration and my son would likely be attending UT. However, if it was an all things being substantially equal situation between two schools, the party school just might lose out in those circumstances.

How often do things in life come down to close decisions like that however
Prepster,
Honestly the newspaper only listed the top ten! I'm sure they will lose ther national ranking as a party school as soon as Mr. Princeton realizes Little Fungo has left campus. I do know they removed 6 ATM machines from campus and relocated them to minor league parks. Big Grin

I attended OU in the 70's, and at the time, they were #1 without a doubt. I saw more gram scales and hefty bags than you could imagine.

You now also know why I am crazy at times.LOL Wink

My daughter spent her Freshman year there, and I got to see my old dorm..........much smaller than I remember, and now they are heavily recruiting my son.

Must be a family gig??

Now most of the bars are coffee shops. They aren't in the top 10 anymore...........trust me, I saw # 1 Cool

that's funny........

Coach Merc,
I can just hear it now, "oh great guys the new CF doesn't party"! "Does he have a set of wheels"?

Each player definetly has a role on the team!
Let's be real! Given the right circumstances, and the right predelictions of the kids, any college is a potential party school. If your son is interested in playing baseball, you need to spend a great deal of time making sure they understand the consequences.

I've made a big deal of pointing out negative stories about athletes who have transgressed and trying to make the point to my son that athletes are judged differiently (i.e. their transgressions end up in the newspapers while non-athletes frequently don't). I hope he will make the right decisions about partying at school.

Sorry--I just had to add the Largest Private University in Virginia to a rightful place on the list.

One recent major publication stated that The University of Tennessee is not on the list because it would be unfair to list the professionals with the amateurs.

That's a broad brush and I think you're wrong. No, I'm not Mr. Naive who just fell off the turnip truck. If you're talking about ON CAMPUS drinking and drugging I would submit to you that their are plenty of schools who have a zero-tolerance for such stuff. Other schools, mostly the big ones we all want our players to play at are much more lax.

by pt: So, you contend that there is drinking and partying on every single college campus in the country, bar none?
there are some things you should consider - -

1) there is partying to varying degrees at all high schools - students live with parents

2) colleges get their students from those high schools - students live on their own

From my knowledge I would have to say that one can find a "party" at any school. It may not be as large or as wild as at a party school, but no matter who attends the school or what the administration puts forward, we are sons of Adam and when someone says "Don't!" we manytimes turn our heads and investigate. This doesn't mean we all just naturally can't help ourselves, but we all will succumb to temptation but for the grace of God. One can't administrate sin out of another's life. You can make it harder for someone else to fall, but you can't eliminate temptation. Also there are students at Christian/moral colleges because Mom & Pop said so. I could go much farther, but I'll refrain.
Also, the "party" schools do have those that graduate that have never drank, never done dope, and are still virgins along with other moral traits. Maybe fewer than the "stone cold sober" schools, but I would have to say they are there.
"Party" schools = not much administrative restraints - much easier to have/find party or harder to avoid parties

Zero tolerance schools? Right! Zero tolerance only defines the administration's views, not the student's. All this means is they (the administration) has adopted a rule stating they don't tolerate partying. Go to the 7-11 next to the campus and check out the brew sales. In my opinion this is a much more accurate indicator. Big Grin
