My team was at a tournament this weekend Runner on 1st and batter swings and misses 3rd strike ball goes past catcher to backstop my runner who is on first runs to 2nd and ump sent him back saying since base was occupied batter couldnt run to 1st and he sent my runner back to first. why

Because he didn't know what he was talking about... He was correct that the BR is out (if less than 2 outs) because 1st was occupied at the TOP. But there is no reason to return the runner... bad call

and there you have it.........in a nutshell....agreed this is a very bad call on a very basic fundamental rule.....
