Does the NCAA have a rule that prohibits a high school player giving batting lessons for pay? I couldn't find anything on the NCAA website, but a little voice in the back of my mind is saying something about being paid for services in the sport you're participating is a no-no. The high school coach is giving my son's name to the youth league players as an instructor for them.

Thanks.

Actually, the coach told him the parents wanted to pay. And we're talking affluent neighborhood here (not us though). And son currently works when he can for $$. Actually, he probably won't do it anyway due to lack of time. However, I would just like to know the answer to the question.

Edited to add:
Our area is saturated with former ML players, and others, that charge nicely for coaching - and they get a lot of work. I considered it an honor for a high school player to be afforded this opportunity considering the coaching talent in this area. (Current situation for him is trying to decide among several DI's or take the recommendation of the scouts and go to a juco for a year or two - tough decision!!!)

DO NOT ALLOW YOUR SON TO TAKE ANY PAY!!!!!!

Working at a camp where he is on a staff with other players and all are being paid the same amount and doing other "camp" things besides coaching is ok.

HOWEVER...doing private lessons is another story. AT the D-1 level is is allowed if a very strict regiment of rules and controls are followed. At the D-2 level it is strictly forbidden.

Be sure to ask the colleges Athletic Director what is allowed at your son's school divsion. DO NOT go by information from the coach. The AD's office is where NCAA complicance is controled, not the coaches office.

Here is the D-1 Info for Fee for Lesson issues

12.4.2.1 Fee-for-Lesson Instruction
A student-athlete may receive compensation for teaching or coaching sport skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis, provided: (Revised: 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, 4/25/02 effective 8/1/02)

(a) Institutional facilities are not used; (Adopted: 4/25/02 effective 8/1/02)

(b) Playing lessons shall not be permitted; (Adopted: 4/25/02 effective 8/1/02)

(c) The institution obtains and keeps on file documentation of the recipient of the lesson(s) and the fee for the lesson(s) provided during any time of the year; and (Adopted: 4/25/02 effective 8/1/02)

(d) The compensation is paid by the lesson recipient (or the recipient's family) and not another individual or entity. (Adopted: 4/25/02 effective 8/1/02)

(e) Instruction to each individual is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time. (Adopted: 4/2/03 effective 8/1/03)

(f) The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions. (Adopted: 4/2/03 effective 8/1/03)

Now the D-2 rule looks at it slightly different

13.13.2.1.1.1 Self-Employment
A student-athlete with remaining eligibility is not permitted to conduct his or her own camp or clinic.

Be very carefull.

My son ran a camp in 2002 and was heavily sanctioned by the NCAA. Email me if you'd like more details.
