Have any of you seen any legitimate claims of pay for playing time in HS? Any examples of a major donor to a private school getting his son playing time in return for a large donation or even straight cash to the coach? If so, how obvious was it and how long did it last? I'd love to hear what others have to say on this topic.

Sounds like I might be walking into a long conversation, but I'll bite first. Not so much as far as actually paying, that I know of, but when the team has 6 dad assistant coaches that do nothing but sit on buckets one has to wonder As far as how long it last, smh, the small town I came from it was generational and from what I hear it continues to this day.

When my son's HS coach cut the son of the snack bar supervisor, who not only ran the snack bar, but also ran the team/family dinners after each Friday home game, at the start of his senior year, I knew coach was much, much  more pure than driven snow.

Wonder if coach lost his team chemistry after that decision. Just saying things can go downhill pretty quick with 15 or so hungry teenagers

Oddly enough team chemistry did go down, but I don't think it was due to the food;  We all pitched in on that. It was more like coach not being around enough due looking for a new day job plus wife giving birth very prematurely to their 3rd kid, and his assistant being woefully unprepared to assume responsibility, plus the fact that it was his least talented team in a few years....   sorry didn't mean to write a book!

I think it's more common at the college level, where you'll get a player who is the 35th most talented on a 35 man roster, and Dad is a big time donor to the school. As long as it doesn't get out of hand(i.e. kid being a starter, or getting regular playing time), most accept it as the way of the world.

In HS, you'll find coach's favorites, or the dreaded coach's kid on the roster, sometimes as a starter. An out and out lining of a coach's pocket for his son to play? I'm sure it's happened. HS coaching doesn't pay.

Over the eight year span my kids were in high school I heard rumors and accusations. But they came from angry parents of cut or benched kids that were spread by parents of cut or benched kids. Always be careful of what you don’t see or hear firsthand.

I've seen a few schools with 6+ coaches. One has 3 different pitching coaches. The kids are all confused as the coaches are all teaching different things. I don't really know why a HS would need 6 coaches.

We played a team that had four or five coaches, including a mental conditioning coach, which, thinking about it, might make some sense.
