This is a hard thread to put out, but I need some help thinking this through. My son, and our family too, are at the crossroads about playing college baseaball. He is at a top 25 college depending on the poll you read, and was a medical RS Junior last season (06-07). He has maintained an overall 3.23 GPA while attending the University for two years. The RS was due to rotator cuff and labrum surgery, but the doctor said he had Long Thoratic Nerve damage as well (which is regnerating). He has worked hard getting back since January (when he was released to play), but has not pitched in a regular game this season (07-08). He will be a graduating Senior this coming 08-09 season with 18 hours left to graduate. Coach told him the week before the season started that his velocity was a problem and they wanted to monitor him (his velocity has steadily, but slowly increased). At this time his has thrown over 25 innings in simulated games for the team, striking out 11, walking 4, and giving up 1 earned run. I know this all seems a bit much but my son is the last non-active player left to be evaluated. He was not redshirted this year, even though he did not play in a real game. All other redshirts and non-active players have been sent home. The coach scheduled 2 end-of-the-season evaluations on the same day last week (one of which was my son’s), and although he met with one player, the coach put off the meeting with my son until after the conference tournament. I am confused about why the coach has put off this meeting. The only players left are the active players (which will be evaluated, of course, at the end of the season) and my son. What does this mean – if anything?

My opinion, coach is waiting to see if he will be needed by what players appear to be coming and going.
Most coaches will not carry a senior who will not make a significant impact for the team, unfortunetly it is what it is these days.
With all of the injury issues that you have presented, with roster limits in place, money tight and already carrying your son on the team for a few years and not knowing his future role, it's a tough call for him right now.

You just are going to wait until he is ready to speak to your son.

JMO.

Best of luck.
dolphball,

Welcome

Even though you have given lots of information, it is still not quite enough.

Unfortunately, there is no one outside the coaching staff that can answer all your questions.

Just out of curiousity... Did your son pitch much and was he successful before the surgery? There have been some amazing stories regarding players coming into their own during their senior season.

Best of luck
