Son's summer team will be attending the Perfect game WWBA tournament(17U). The problem is there are a couple of showcases here in Northern California at the same time that would be great for him to attend. We do not know what to do. Info please. What is the PG tournament all about (competition, college coaches in attendace from all divisions, etc.). Need to decide to stay in Nor. Cal or attend the PG tournament. All adive will be greatly appreciated.

In my mind, without any questions or reservations, this was the most enjoyable and important event of the summer and is not to be missed.

08son had a blast (and so did 08Dad). Pro scouts and college coaches everywhere - I counted 70+ radar guns at one game. Simply amazing.

It will rain, your games will get moved, you will play on some fields in the middle of nowhere - and I still wouldn't miss it for the world.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions

We love these tournaments and the summer WWBA 17u is extremely heavily scouted. But, I don't have any familiarity with your other events, so I can't compare them.

Three points I would make:

1. As the 17u tourney field has been expanded, more and more games have been scheduled away from the East Cobb complex. It's a fact of life that with 4 fields in one place, and a 5th right across the street at Kell High School, you stand a better chance of getting seen if you're in that area than at one of the outlying fields. Unfortunately I don't know what you can do about that except go and take your chances.

2. WWBA events are absolutely the very best place for a pitcher to get noticed. For position players, much tougher, and if you happen to have a bad week with the stick you may end up wondering if you wasted your money. It helps if your team features pitchers who light up RADAR guns, because they will attract scouts to your games, giving the position players a chance to catch someone's eye as well. It's challenging for a position player/hitter, but if you're going to seek recruitment you'll have to face up to that challenge sometime, somewhere, and this is as good a place as there is over the summer.

3. The most effective use of a WWBA trip is to identify in advance which programs your son is most interested in, then have him keep them posted regularly via e-mail on who he's playing for, when and where. You might also ask those specific programs whether they will be more actively scouting the WWBA events or the events nearer to you. Also note that after July 1, the coaches can talk to your son face-to-face at the tourney, so this is a well timed event in terms of giving you the opportunity for valuable "face time".
tCaBB - Thanks for the pm - You have a pm.

Midlo Dad - Thanks - Lots of food for thought as son is a posistion player and as of now I do not know what our pitching is looking like. I believe our pitching will be good but will not have that one pitcher that attracts a lot of attention. The hope would be to face a team with that so called pitcher that college coaches will come to see.

08Dad - Thanks and thanks for your offer.

Will a list of college coaches attending be made avaliable before the event? Will there be schools at the DII and DIII level? The events we are considering that conflict with East Cobb are the TPX 96 at Sonoma State and Showball at AT&T park. Sounds like a lot more exposure at the East Cobb. Want to make a decission soon so if we are staying in CA we get our deposits in to secure his spot.

Thanks again all for your responses. I look foward to more input.

gimages- I'm going to put it another way to you. What would a coach think if he was in northern California watching a kid at a showcase. The coach likes him a little and asks him who he plays with. Your kid says he plays for ____(fill in blank) and they are in Georgia (while he stayed home to play in an individual event).

Now, what does that tell the coach about what kind of team guy that player is? Don't think that isn't a huge factor in the recruiting process.

PG WWB tournament is MUUCH fun, and where else can you play teams from all over the USA in one place? Our favorite tournament last year.

Bring much $$ for gate fee--go ahead and buy the full week ticket. Bring snacks and drinks. They may make you leave them in the car, but that's ok. Concessions may or may not be present in outlying parks, but they are pretty good at ECB.

Bring a big umbrella or sunshade: it will either rain or be very hot and sunny. Sunscreen for sure. Bug spray for sure. We have lots of skeeters.

Plan a few trips to see the sites around town! You'll have time.

Bring several wooden bats for games, and practice with wood before you get here.

Many fields are utilized in the Cobb area, so hotel should be somewhat central. Try the Barrett Pkwy area near Town Center Mall, or Windy Hill area near I-75. Also, the main park is near Canton Rd, so look around the Hwy 575 exit.

Bring a GPS if you have one! Sometimes you have to zoom from one field to another in remote areas to make your next game, so it comes in handy.Directions given in tourny packet are from main ECB park to other fields, not cross referenced with other locations (EX: Pope HS to Sandy Plains Park.)
