I don't think fans should tell players they suck but I disagree that you can't criticise a player unless you are better.

Those guys are paid millions of dollars to perform and if you perform at a replacement level for 10m dollars (not sure what holt makes) that is not good. So I can understand why a fan or journalist that pays good dollars to see games gets frustrated.

A manager that runs a big company in the ground is also better at his job than  most but is criticised.

You are always measured against your field of profession and not rec hacks.

That applies to normal jobs too. If I'm lets say a computer programmer I'm compared to other professionals of that job and not against untrained people.

Still I think it is stupid to tweet players suck or shout it in a stadium.

What I found amusing other than Holt's response is he's not a crud player. His average is low this year. He hasn't played much due to vertigo. But for the past three years he's been a competent bat and above average glove capable of playing seven positions. He's the ultimate utility player. Playing so many positions frees up a roster spot for what the team needs. For three years he's given the team 290-450 at bats. He hit .280 or better for almost three years until vertigo took over last summer. He made the all star team one year.

RJM - the fan that tweeted that must have been a Yankee fan.  ;-)

Admittedly, Holt is a fan favorite and I think he provides more value than they've paid him making him a front office favorite as well.  Yes it has been a down year due to a condition he has little control over, but I don't see/hear him making excuses about it.  He's earned the rope the Red Sox have given him, and he is one of my favorite players.  I love his selflessness and versatility.  He is a baller.
