Altuve is on a great pace but you have to be careful to make age comps with hall of famers (yeah I know technically he isn't in the hall but who cares?). Those guys are HOFers because they were great when young but they also aged exceptionally well and got lucky in the injury department.
Rose played extremely well till age 38 and then was allowed to play badly till age 45 (like ichiro) to get the record.
In theory altuve could catch him but would you get on altuve being this good until he is in his late 30s and then hanging on till his mid 40s?
I mean ichiro did it so I wouldn't rule it out but I don't think it is likely.
