Hi All,

How much weight do college coaches put on PG All-Tournament Team player selection? Or PG events at all for that matter? Their tournament stats are often incorrect.

My 2016 played in the PG/EVO Upperclass Tournament last weekend and played very well, but he (and almost half our team) had incorrect stats on Gamechanger. Even with multiple emails and correction forms completed, the stats were not corrected by the time the All-Tournament players were selected. I know the selection is partially based on these stats. Do college coaches even consider these stats to be reliable? I've often relied on the experience and knowledge base of the members of these forums and I appreciate your help.

Thanks for your help,

WestCoastMom

We will chalk it up to a learning experience. Stats shouldn't be made available if they are grossly incorrect. Everyone makes mistakes but effort should be made to correct their mistakes. It's good to know that coaches who were unable to see him won't rely on the stats for their information.

We won't spend the limited money we have on another PG event. I think there are much better ways to spend it. Like his top choice college camps perhaps. We are in the home stretch with this being his last year of high school. Yay!

westcoastmom,

I'm sorry you feel that way.  We have a person responsible for correcting all scoring errors and she does stay fairly busy.  Most people contact us and then we double check everything.  All Tournament teams are based on nothing but stats.  When we do All Prospect lists and rankings it means much more than stats to a college recruiter or scout.  But it is an honor to the player, so we have always adjusted All Tournament recognition to take into account mistakes.  However, some statistic that says a player went 4 for 11 in a tournament doesn't tell anyone, let alone a recruiter, a thing about that player. However, our scouting notes that are entered in the database is much more valuable to coaches and scouts.

Also, check and see if you have actually paid Perfect Game anything for your son to participate in events like this.  I understand you may have paid to play on a team that paid the entry fee to play in that tournament. You also may have spent some money traveling and attending.  You certainly are free to never attend another PG event.  We would feel better if you were happy with your experience.

BTW, did you count the number of college coaches watching? And didn't playing on MLB spring training fields mean anything? How was the competition? Did you read the daily reports?  Was there anything good about it?  Why do you suppose all the top teams keep coming back?

Anyway, that tournament was last week.  If the scoring was inaccurate please email staff@perfectgame.org and explain.  Sometimes the mistakes are caused by inaccurate rosters beIng turned in.  I guarantee that someone will care and they will look into it.

Welcome to the HSBBW and best of luck to your son,

Thank you so much, PGStaff for your reply. I contacted Gamechanger about an hour after the game when I noticed the stats were wrong. They sent me the link to the online correction form which I filled out right away. When I didn't hear back I filled out another one as did his coach. And I emailed the tournament director.

My son looked at the rest of the player stats from his team and many were incorrect but in their favor so they weren't planning to correct it.

The most costly part of the event was the hotel and travel. He had a great time and was very happy with his performance. First thing he said was how beautiful the fields were. He had a great experience, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. Financially it was either, or. We can't travel to all the schools he's interested in for their camps so we thought a broad, well attended tournament was the right choice.

My concern was that colleges who were unable to attend would rely on his incorrect stats making that tournament a detriment to him. His only disappointment was that he didn't get credit for his actual at bats. Like you said, All Tournament recognition is an honor and he definitely earned that honor.

Thank you for the email link. And thank you very much for taking the time to help.

I personally wrote PG regarding a couple of issues with All Tournament Teams, and the folks at PG fixed them right away. They were great to work with, and I would recommend their tournaments and showcases to anyone.  We couldn't send Ryan to as many as we would have liked, because of finances, but he attended quite a few.  He always had a great time.

This happens more than one might think - at least 3 times during our team's PG tournaments. This past summer, the scorekeeper was off by one player in the batting order for 2+ innings. The resulting scout blog was way off. I notified PG but it never got corrected. Not sure why. Good to have the official email now when I need to send corrections in the future.
