Ryanrod, we did OK, won our pool with a 2-0-1 record (should have been 3-0, but bad baserunning mistake cost us a win in a 0-0 tie game).

BOF, we get to play each other's teams tomorrow, if we both win our 10:30 games. Your team will be on Reds #3 at 10:30 and we'll be on Reds #4. Losers go home and winners play at 3:30. If we each win, we face each other in the round of 8.

BOF, I'll be busy with my players, but if we face each other, please be sure to introduce yourself. It should be fun!

I had the pleasure of meeting BOF on Friday afternoon at the tourney, and had a nice conversation. He probably won't say anything, but his son pitched a very nice game on Saturday going the distance for his team for a complete game shutout.

06catcherdad,
Best of luck to your Vipers team. That would be nice for your team to square up against another websters son's team. I'll be checking the blogs! We were upset today, and sent packing to the consolation bracket! It's too bad, but that's why they play the game, right?
Well we both came through the round of 16 and we played the Vipers but came up short losing 5 to 9. We made a few uncharacteristic errors, and our starter had some control issues and give the Vipers credit, they hammered his mistakes. The Viper starter did a great job of keeping our bats silent, once he got out of there we made a little run at them but not quite enough. They have some great looking kids on the team, clearly the best team we saw there, and it shows as I just checked the standings and they have moved on to the championship game that is already in progress as I am typing this. Hope they take the trophy home.

Conditions were brutal, 105-107 degrees and it became a survival of the fittest contest. Overall tournament was well run and well scouted. I saw coaches there from the Midwest and throughout the West.

Nice talking to both 06 and bsbl. 06 runs a great program and it shows. Tell bsbl Jr to can the girlfriend they are only trouble. Wink
BOF and Ryanrod, thanks for the congrats. I just got home a bit ago, from a 12 hour drive, and man am I tired!

The boys played well, and a few of them learned some things about competing, and themselves, that I don't think they were too sure of prior to going down there. We had a relatively small roster, only maxed out at 15 players with a few who were only there through early Sunday. When we took the field for yesterday's championship game, it was easy to make out the lineup, as I only had 9 players available.

Yesterday was a bit of an adventure. In our first game, we were down 5-0 after 2 1/2 innings, but chipped away in the 3rd and 4th to go up 6-5. The Eaters tied us in the top of the 6th, but JD Davis came up with a runner on and no outs in the bottom of the 6th and launched a towering home run to left that landed inside the maintenence building that is out beyond left field. The ball went through an open garage door on one hop, and those of you who were there know how far that building is from home plate. JD hit very well throughout the tournament, and gave us 6 solid innings on the mound, and took home the tournament MVP award.

In the championship game, Max Cordy started and he was pretty tired after 3 innings. When I asked him if he could get me one more inning, he told me he could do that, but to get someone ready for beyond the 4th. He had a quick 4th, and told me he'd go one more. When he came off the field in the 5th, he told me to leave him alone, that he was finishing the game, and felt like he'd gotten his 2nd wind. He took a 9-3 lead to the final inning and finished strong, striking out the last batter to get the complete game win, 9-4. Max's effort, combined with a 2 inning save on Saturday, earned him the most valuable pitcher award from Perfect Game.

BOF, it was nice to get to meet you, I wish we could have visited a bit longer. Your son's team is one that I've respected for years, and we've had several other very good games with them along the way. They run a good program with the SoCal Bombers. Ryan, my son wasn't down there. He hung up his spikes a couple years ago, and now that he's in his early 20's, spends all his free time hunting and fishing.

Perfect Game really ran this tournament well, and we were very pleased to see as many college coaches and MLB personnel attending the games as we did. For only the 2nd year, it was a great tournamment, and we're looking forward to going back in 2011.
06 - I can imagine how tired (and proud) you must be, quite a feat for you and your team, particularly based on the conditions. A hearty congratulations on a well deserved win! We did not get home until Monday morning at 3AM so I have an idea on how you feel.

Davis is a BEAST and deserves the award! He hit some shots in our game. My son told me after our game with you that he would NEVER see an inside fastball from him, talk about quick hands, quite a pitcher as well. Nice job get some rest!

I second the hearty congrats on your win 06! Awesome to not only win with the outrageous September weather the kids endured, but to do it on Monday with 9 kids is amazing!

I have a feeling that Davis will work his way up a bit in the PG rankings next time they're updated! Everytime I read a blog on your team, he was right there in the thick of things...he is a beast! Wink

Bsbl247, I was going to leave this alone, but figured there's another point I can make that will hopefully help some other young man along the way. That being, JD Davis and Rhys Hoskins performed like I expected them to. They're both already committed to D1 programs, and they basically continued doing what I've seen them do all along, which is to hit very well.

What was more impressive to me, and the point of this post, was how some of the middle to lower tier players stepped up and performed. There were some players who were supporting role players on their high school teams who stepped up when called upon and performed at a level they hadn't played at before. Chris Muse-Fisher is a great example. He pitched in relief for his high school, as he was behind a couple guys who had D1 commitments, and who are both very good. He never got much of a chance to perform under pressure with a lot on the line, until this tournament. When Chris came into the game on Saturday, it was with a 1-run lead, the bases loaded and 2 outs. He struck out the batter, and then went on to retire the remaining 6 outs all on strikeouts. This is a kid who a lot of college coaches overlook because he's not that big and his fastball only gets to 83. But, he's a lefty who throws strikes and misses a lot of bats. He's also got a weighted GPA of 4.5, SAT's of over 2100 and ranks #8 in a class of over 500 students. That kind of guy should get looks, and a performance like he gave on Saturday, where he struck out 12 batters over 5 1/3 with no walks should get him noticed. I'd like to think that he also learned something about himself out there and of his ability to compete. Hopefully, what he takes away from this tournament is something he couldn't have gotten in other ways. Hopefully, it'll help him find a collgiate opportunity with a quality university. There are several more players in the same situation who playe in this tournament.

That is something I hope more young men realize about why to consider playing in tournaments such as this. It's not just about the big time guys, but anyone who takes avantage of the opportunity.

Actually there were two outs, but that just made it more impressive.... Wink

My son was playing with the Eaters, which gave him the distinction of being that last AZ player in the tournament. It was a great weekend. Amazingly hot and lots of good baseball.

Congratulations to the EDH Vipers...
From the sound of it, the Upperclass event was put together very well, but the noticeable lack of scouts at the Underclass event did not go with out comment. Last years event in Tucson, all at TEP, allowed the Underclassmen to watch the Upperclass games with out having to travel half-way across the city. It allowed them more exposure to watching the "goings on" behind the scene as well. It was an eye opening experience for my son and for his teammates. The absence of the that this year made it seem like just another baseball tournament. Teams from out of state pay a lot of money to come to this event and, from what I heard, they were less than impressed. Hopefully the classics this month will be better!
Griff, is it possible that the lack of coaches was due primarily to the fact that this was only the 2nd year for this tournament, and that it was moved from Tucson? In talking with a few northern CA coaches before leaving, I did hear rumbling about the location being changed after they'd purchased plane tickets months ago for Tucson. It may not seem like much, but I know that coaches at several of the mid-majors out here stretch their recruiting budget by getting low cost fares months in advance when they are on sale. If the location changes, sometimes it is not worth the extra expense to make the change. I don't know if this factored into the apparent lack of coaches or not, but I do know that we saw a nice number of coaches at the upperclass event. While it wasn't a bunch, I'd guess that we were scouted by 15-20 different coaches, as well as a handful of MLB scouts.

We saw the same thing as you mention at last year's Arizona Fall Invitational. Hardly any coaches there at all, when that is one of the main reasons many aspiring student athletes go to these showcases and tournaments. We attributed the lack of college coaches to it being the very first year for the Fall Invitational. I think it'll be a good tournament in due time, but as a first year event, not many coaches came. I think both of these tournaments will see more collegiate attendance in due time.

I do know the Jr. Fall Classic is very well attended, and we'll be there again in a few short weeks.
