OK everyone...as a University of Cincinnati alum and somewhat longtime Cincinnatian, make sure you at least try Skyline Chili. "jerseydad" will confirm.

Nothing like any chili you've had before...but natives are CRAZY about it. Spaghetti, topped by chili (different kind than you've had before), topped by grated cheddar cheese. Thats a 3-way. Order onions in between the chili and cheese...thats a 4-way. Want beans? Thats a 5-way. (I recommend the 4-way and add a little 'hot' sauce).

For pizza or Italian food...LaRosas is the hometown favorite.

For ice cream...Graeters is a must.

Like ribs? Try Montgomery Inn in the suburb of Montgomery (pretty much where I grew up). Bob Hope used to order them shipped to his home in CA.

And for your die-hards...there are plenty of White Castles (sliders!) around...not my cup of tea...but others love 'em.

Go Bearcats! Smile

Great list justbaseball, I hope you don’t mind if I pile on to your list of local favorites for the Cincinnati area.

The Skyline or Gold Star chili is a must but if you have some extra time see if you can find a Frish's Big Boy restaurant and try the Big Boy hamburger. Much different than other Big Boy chains.

It's been a long time since I spent any time in the campus area however if Zino's Pizza (Clifton area) is still around I would check it out. Great French Onion soup and something they call a Zinover. (deep fried inverted pizza). Not great for the diet but it's worth it.

If you find your way crossing the river into KY my vote for best ribs is Walt’s Hitching Post. The fire pit is in the parking lot and the smell is fantastic.

If you’re looking for a salty snack check out Hussman’s potato chips. (Barbeque is my favorite). For a sweet tooth try a French Chew candy bar. (denture wearers beware!)

Last but not least, depending on your PG National game schedule try to get down to Great American Park to see the Reds play. Might not see the best baseball but the ballpark is worth checking out. ( I think the Rangers are in town)

Good luck to all our HSBBW’ers participating in the Nationals!

This morning, there were two young men who ran 6.2 second (or better) sixties. I believe both were from Georgia, although I'm not sure.

If I'm not mistaken, that's world class speed.

This is going to be a great weekend. I hope my kid doesn't just stand around and stare at the unbelievable talent that's here. That's my job.

Just got in from Cincinnati, where I managed to eat a Skyline Chili Cheese Coney at a Cincinnati Reds game (where we saw 5 home runs)in the beautiful Great American Ballpark. It was fun to see Hamilton play for the first time since he left Raleigh. And on the way to the airport today we detoured to Graeter's Ice Cream on Buttermilk Parkway. Thanks for the great suggestions on food and entertainment, justbaseball and jerseydad! Oh, and the PG National was great too. Lots of talent, lots of scouts, lots of college coaches. We also met many parents and players who were headed down our way for the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars next week.
I too just got back from Cincinnati. I was glad I got to meet a couple of fellow members and had the opportunity to see their sons play. The level of talent was to say the least tremendous. The pitchers ruled!!!! Having to face a different guy each time up and seeing that kind of stuff from a different guy each time was really tough on all the hitters. I have never seen that many guys pitching at that level. Numerous guys in the 90's and almost everyone in the 88-90 range. The collection of talent on the field blew me away. I did not see one player that was not a flat out stud. BP was a treat and so was the infield sessions. The games belonged to the arms. They flat out dominated. There is a big difference in swinging metal all HS season against guys in the low to mid 80's for the most part and then swinging the wood against these kind of arms. My hat is off once again to PG for putting on one heck of an event. The talent was off the charts. You would have to be there to really appreciate it.
Cincinnati was an incredible event. I heard someone say that he was told that well over 300 scouts/coaches had checked in for player information. I would say there was at least 3 scouts from every major league team there. There was at least one coach from every major D1 school as well.

Jerry Ford told me that there were at least 90 pitchers throwing in the low 90's. I saw 2 kids throw 96, one being Howie Long's kid, who was 6'7" and weighed in at 280lbs. He also hit a ball in BP that went over the scoreboard in RF by at least 15'. It had to have traveled 475'.

I would agree that the pitchers seemed to dominate most of the hitters. There were exceptions of course. Hosmer hit a BOMB to right field Saturday. There were a few HR's hit by others as well.

The size of some of the kids blew me away for them to be 17 years old. Eek

Overall, it was by far the best thing my son has ever participated in. He had a blast!

Thanks to PG for putting on such an amazing weekend. They ran an amazingly organized event.

Glad to hear that those in attendance enjoyed the national showcase. We think it was equal to, some think better, than last years. 17 first round picks played in the National last year and 10 others who went in the 2nd/3rd round. Overall, 112 players were drafted from the national last year.

This year was kind of fun. All the talent was outstanding and we will see that, as these young guys start committing to colleges and some become early draft picks next June.

Old Pitcher,

The final total was 101 pitchers who topped out at 90 or better including your son! The very last pitcher in the event topped out at 94 mph. The odd thing is, we felt the position players were better overall than last year. In the future it will be interesting to see how many of these kids play on top college programs and in the Big Leagues.
