Took my son to the PG Underclass Nationals in Ft. Myers over the holidays. I wasn't going to enter him just yet into showcases because he is a young 2014 at 15 years-old. Living in South Georgia and both of us having some free time, we decided to go. First of all, we both had fun. However, my son was physically ready but, not mentally ready. Let me give you some examples. I watched him throw as they tested his skill from the outfield. Every throw was over the catchers/fielders head. I said, "son, whats up with your throws"? He tells me he did it on purpose to get a better gun reading. I explain to him that accuracy, as you can imagine, is probably important. His reply; Oh. Then, he decides to use someone elses bat the entire showcase (some kid he made friends with). I said Wes, why are you using a 34" bat instead of your 33"? He says, "It felt good". Agh! Again, we had fun! I am sure he'll do much better next year. We plan on going to the same event. He usually gains about 5-6 mph arm speed per year and he is also still growing so, it will be fun to see the progress. Oh, another thing; out of 300 or so kids, they put him in a group of 11 players that 3 are #1's in their state and 4 already had college commits. He batted right behind the #1 prospect there, Justin Williams. He did fine though going 3 for 3 with a double the first day (Justin went 0 - 3 the first day with 2 K's). But stunk up the place going 0 - 4 the second day. He got to pitch one inning and struggled with control. Nerves I guess. His stats were 81 from the mound, 80 from the outfield and 7.35 60. He is 15 years old, 6' 3" 180. He still looks very much like a kid though. It will be fun next year when he is the big cheese. So, I guess my point is; if you go early (14 or 15 years-old) tell your son to just have fun and play baseball. Don't try and do something different because it is a showcase.

SouthGeorgia,

I'm sure you told your son, "Don't worry, you did fine."

Now I'm going to tell you the same thing: "Don't worry Dad, it sounds like he did fine!"

Your son sounds like he showed potential, and I bet the Perfect Game scouting report will reflect that. They are experts at projecting players in the future, at the college and pro levels. It sounds like your son showed a lot of potential for age 15.

And I agree, it was a smart move for you and your son to attend this year. Next year he will know more what to expect, and will show improvement, which the Perfect Game raters also like to see thru the years.

Congrats for having a pretty good showing and a good time, and for keeping it in perspective. Smile

Good luck!

Julie

Great website! I can see I will be hanging out around here for the next 3 years (having a 2014 grad).

Don't get me wrong, as far as the showcase itself; very cool. Both my son and I had a great time. Hanging around in Sanibel Island the day after was too shabby either. We will do this same showcase when he is a junior no matter what. I can't imagine a better place to be between the holiday's than hanging at the beach and watching some baseball. In all truth, my son is having a great sophomore year. He was asked to tryout this past fall for the premier showcase team in South Georgia (Round Trip) and made the team as one of the youngest players. All their current roster are going on to play at the next level and one kid is suppose to go in the 1st round this June: Byron Buxton. He was also offered a spot at one of our state universities (which I think is crazy for a sophomore in high school). As bad as I think he did in the showcase; it really doesn't matter. We gonna do these for fun anyway. Again, great website!
Hey sounds like the kid did good....its like taking the SAT early good practice for when it really matters...

My son is 15, not as big as your son...6'1 150 soaking wet, lefty pitcher playing varsity right now as a Frosh....he was asked to play on a 17u showcase team thats playing in a couple PG tourneys and some World league...not sure what its called...the team is coached by a former major league pitcher and a former AA pitcher and their HS pitching coach....he will be the youngest on this team and I was very hesitant when asked...same concerns as you "is he ready"

I hope he does fine...the Demarini top 96 will be in our area this summer so I may send him to that too...

Congrats to your son and if nothing else its a great memory for dad

Similar situation for my son. I took him to his first showcase this weekend (PG showcase in Denver). He just finished freshmen year and turns 15 today.
It was a great learning experience. I thought he did well overall. He is a catcher and had a pop time of 2.12 though his velocity was only 66mph. Obviously, he needs to strengthen his arm but he had better pop times than a lot of players who had velocities in the low 70s - which means his footwork and release are pretty good (not that they can't get better).
His 10 at bats were not good. He was late on everything and did not square up any balls. He was using a 33" bat and then switched to a 32" bat for game situations and went 3 for 5 with some line drives during the games. The fact of the matter was even during the evaluation part of the hitting - the PG guy threw a lot harder than he is used to for batting practice. We will know better next time.
Most important thing we learned was how to pace himself. Catchers went last (after 60yd, outfield, infield). The catchers ended up warming up 4-5 times while they waited. All of the catchers felt their arms were a little tired due to warming up and the waiting - then warming up - ect. Next time - he will wait to warm up.
Again, overall a valuable learning experience. He knows where he needs to get to and hopefully is more motivated now to do the work to get there.
What are everyone's opinions on completing a PG showcase the summer/fall after freshman year if it were not relatively local (>5 hour drive)?

That is, if you had to travel out of state a fair distance, would you recommend a PG event or would you recommend attending other local type showcases for the "experience" and focus on a PG event after Sophomore year once the skills, size, etc...have progressed even further?

Also, what does a local PG showcase event typically cost?

Dad,

I would definitely recommend you do a local showcase after his Freshman year. It is always good to get a smaller showcase under your belt first. Also the cost of the PG showcases typically run $499. That's a lot of money to spend before your son has really developed. My first son was a late bloomer and did his first PG showcase after his junior year (late) and my other son was during his sophomore year. They developed at very different times.
Dad, I would do the local one first, and wait on PG until after the sophomore year. You might find one where he will get some feedback, but that feedback won't be posted on a website.

To me, the best purpose of a PG showcase is when you are ready to be videotaped and have your relevant times recorded and published on the internet.
