From what I have seen and read, it appears the World vs. the World Open is one is for all the top talent around the globe (per se) vs. the other is for "unsigned or uncommitted talent" around the globe . . . comparable to the Uncommitted Showcase that is run in conjunction with the National Underclass Session 1 event in Mesa, AZ. PG can clarify but I read that somewhere within their site, I am almost certain, as my son received an invite to the World and I wondered the exact same thing.
fillsfan,

Sorry, I missed this earlier. The biggest difference between the two is that the World is much more selective. However, the open is much more likely to produce big surprises. They are played together so scouts have an opportunity to see everyone. The World is heavily scouted and typically as many as a dozen of the 30 MLB scouting directors attend. It has had many current Major league players attend in past years. These events are not for everyone, but the results have been very good over the years.

New2This,

Before they changed the recruiting schedule many of the top colleges attended the World Showcase. Now, whether it is a quiet period or dead period... These college coaches didn't die. Many players have become high recruiting priorities based on what happened at the World Showcase. Also, many of those players in attendance have already signed with a college, they are there for different reasons.

A couple weeks ago we had an uncommited player show up in an event in Arizona. He is from Oregon, we were not aware of him before hand! We recived at least a dozen inquiries from DI schools (East and West) who were not there about him within the next week. He is going to be a DI player if that is what he wants. Maybe even a draft pick. Evidently he had one offer from a Juco before that event.

I don't think everyone should go to these winter events, but if someone is an outstanding player... the results have been very good. We do have some credibility with college coaches throughout the country. They will definitely be looking at what happens at these events. They will be talking to us, the MLB scouts and "others" who were there. Why wouldn't they? College coaches are aware of the amount of talent that attends this event. They actually focus on what happens there.

If anyone has any doubts or expects any miracles by simply showing up... I would not attend these events.
Kimasabe,

Yes, I would say that, that is pretty much correct in most cases. However, every so often there are players who just want to go and compete against top level competition. And there might be a few college committed players who are still wanting to make an even bigger impression before they head off to college. There are also a handful of the very top underclassmen that attend. Jameson Taillon the #1 ranked player in the 2010 class, actually became our #1 player at the World Showcase last year as an underclassman.

I usually don't get caught up in the reasons why players attend, but I can say... If a player doesn't have the necessary talent... He will stand out in a big way at the World Showcase. Unfortunately he will be standing out in the wrong way. It's definitely not for everyone. Also, I'm not sure that I would call it a "must" event for most players. It's just a good high level event.
