O.k., I have another question "out of curiosity". During my 12 yr olds recent game where he was the catcher, a pitch out was called. My son has been taught to clear the plate and close the gap on the ball coming in. He did this well...very well. It ocurred to me that he could have really moved 3'-4' onto the field and, even if the pitch was down the middle, he could have caught it before it reached the batter. That got me wondering, is there any rules or restriction on pitch outs? Are there any limits as to where the catcher can go? Just curious. Thanks!

we had this come up a few years ago in fall ball (obr, I believe). the catcher stepped up onto home plate to catch the ball. since he was there, the batter did not swing. the PU said it was not an infraction since the batter didn't swing. I said that I'm glad he didn't cuz he would've hurt the catcher. PU throws his hands up in the air and says "play on".

What really bothered me was the other coach who taught this kid to do that..
