Saw this tonight in a 16U game -- never seen it before.
- Close tag play at the plate
- Ball was there first but runner legally avoided the tag.
- Catcher & defensive team very upset. They thought he was out.
THEN ....while their coach is disputing the call, the pitcher and catcher confer.
- Catcher then sets up
- Pitcher begins to pitch
- Catcher lunges far to the right in a lame attempt to make it look like a call for a pitchout
- Pitcher throws high heat that hit the PU in the shoulder.
It was an obvious, planned attempt to physically retaliate against the PU for the call they disagreed with. Not only was it totally inappropriate, but it was potentially dangerous and very disturbing to say the least.
- Ump then calls time and talks to coach of defensive team.
- Then talks to both coaches
- Things seemed to get calmed down a bit.
NOW ...
- Runner on 2nd attempts to steal 3rd
- He's out -- absolutely without question.
- FU, probably in an attempt to stick up for his partner, calls him safe.
Now the defensive team is REALLY hot.
Ump calls game over.
I'm just interested in the reaction of some of our veteran umps. Has this ever happened to you? What would you have done? And how about the call by the FU.
Thanks to all the men in blue -- you're often underappreciated!
