At the request of my pitching coach I haven't thrown a ball since 11/30/03.
Last night was my first time back. I was hoping the 8 week layoff would be good for me.
I felt strong but my location wasn't where I wanted it. I felt when I released the ball I wasn't mechanically correct. I was wondering if other pitchers had this layoff and what was their return like?

Thanks:

Yes this is all perfectly normal. I have taken three lay offs of about 2 months in the past 4 years and have experienced many of these same problems when trying to come back. The idea is to come back giving yourself enough time to build you arm up for the stress you put it under while pitching before you start pitching again, or else you could end up with a nice case of tendonitis trying to do too much too soon. Be carefull with the use of a curve ball in the first few weeks throwing and get on a good long toss program before you start back on the mound throwing bullpens.

Determined..........

Be careful not to change your mechanics when you're trying to come back from a lay-off.

Control problems can get frustrating, but are expected! What you shouldn't do is start trying to change things due to frustration.

In my experience Timing is generally the cause of control problems early in the come back stage, and time on the hill will get that back.

As far as being sore... you bet you're sore... muscle groups that havn't been used for awhile will get sore!!

Just take it easy, and do most of your work on flat ground (less stress on the arm than a mound).

If you're still having control probs. in a couple of weeks, have someone take a look, you might be missing something. Take it easy at first though.

Good luck!

My sons typically take the November completly off (except conditioning).

In December they do dry drills, working on nothing but Mechanics, NO Throwing.

The in January they start their throwing but by then their Mechanics should be pretty solid.

I would consider spending time on the balance beam and doing mirror drills.

Play every game as if it were your last
