This morning, I was reading about Will Roberts at Maggie Walker in the Times-Dispatch. At the end of the story, it mentions that he goes to Long Island twice per month for pitching instruction with a guy named Rob Steiner. I have also heard that Jacob Mayers goes to New York as well, although I'm not sure if he sees the same guy.

Is there really such a lack of pitching instruction around here (here being Richmond or even the tidewater area) that there is a need to drive several hours for instruction? It just seems odd to me...I would like to hear some others impressions of what's going on here.

We've got lots of quality pitching instruction in the Northern Region. Multiple baseball schools and instructors with both professional and high level college experience. I've heard there are gurus who like to tout the fact that they've had X number of top round draft signees out of high school, but I don't think this is really necessary.

I didn't mean to slight you guys in the northern part of Virginia, sorry about that.

That's kinda my point. I'm not questioning at all what a parent/player decide to do. That's up to them, their money, their time. I'm sure they know what they're doing, as that is obviously a baseball family. But I just had to believe that there are good instructors in Richmond, with RBA, RBI, etc. Guy Hansen is back, and I know he used to work with some young pitchers in his earlier tour with Richmond.

It sounds to me like its a good job of salesmanship, which I think Spartan alluded to in his post. So, it comforts me to know there is quality instruction around here...hopefully one day I'll have a son who needs a good place to learn the game.
