Is It Possible To Tell Whether A School Is DI, DII, or DIII based on player sizes?

Here are 35-man rosters from three schools. One is DI, one is DII, and one is DIII.

Without doing any research online , try to sort the schools by the physical size of its players. Trick question? Maybe. Maybe not. It's still January and this occupies some time.

Please, no SPOILER POSTS!! Just vote and let's see what we get.

Very interesting, Krak. In our area, where I get to see a large # of D1 schools come play at Liberty...and where my son plays D3...to me there is a HUGE difference in size...and in conditioning. In fact, the size comparison is the one thing that jumped out at me my son's freshman year. There are not many D2 schools in our area...but from where I have seen D2 players, there is not that much difference in size between D2 and D3.
Just be a guess, could be any of the three choices, but look at the height of the players on this 2007 “DI” College World Series Team. To some, the first height (player) listed might give the team away.

The thing is, most of you have misconceptions that D1 programs do not consider smaller players.

It's all about talent and coach's need, no matter what the size a player is.

In fact, I know of a school that has a player that's 5'7" and one that's 6'4".

Krak, you must be bored out of your mind! Smile

But anyway,

TEAM A is a high-caliber DII program

TEAM B is a high-caliber DIII program

TEAM C is a mid-level DI program.

Hurray!!!

I was wrong. Frown
However I know of a D1 program whose players fit into team A profile.

Does it all really matter? If a kid can play, he will no matter what the size.

Louisville. My son loved Chris Cates since he was only an inch taller that spring when Louisville came to play Villanova. Cates would stand next to Chris Dominguez (6'4") near third during between innings warmups and throw harder to first.

I saw an interview where Cates talked about the best size insults tossed at him. I liked, "Mow the grass so the shortstop can see."

I know of a school that had a 5-8 righty drafted in the 10th round last year, who works in the low 90's. College is much more about ability than height. If you can play they just don't care how big you are.

Based on my quick calculations here are the average heights and weights for the 2008 National Champs.

DI Fresno State 6' 2 198
DII Mount Olive 6' 0 195
DIII Trinity 6' 1 195

Not a huge difference in size, but probably a considerable difference in talent.

It was also mentioned that conditioning was a difference between DI players and DII or DIII players. To take this a step further, while there isn't a great difference in size between Trinity and Fresno State players, if you got both teams and lined them up on opposite sides of the same room would you be able to easily tell which team was which? Would the Fresno State players have a larger physical presence? Meaning would they look more athletic, fitter, or better conditioned.

What would happen if you tried the same thing with the Mount Olive and Trinity players? Could you pick out which team was which from seeing them in a lineup?

RJM,

We took a little guff when we named Chris Cates the MVP of one of our tournaments when he was in high school, but he deserved it!

Have heard he is actually a bit shorter than 5'3/145. Chris truly is a player that is fun to watch. He is in the Twins organization.
The Louisville team made an impression on my son. He was in 8th grade then. Aside from Cates, my son walked over to the pitchers behind the backstop to talk to them about gunning and charting pitches. They talked to him for three innings. We hear about the arrogant athletes. There are a lot of good kids out there. He was still pulling for Louisville through the CWS. For a year he wanted to play for them.

I would say...YES on question one...and NO on question 2.

I noticed the same thing about relative sizes from my son's summer team leagues he played in. There a noticeable difference in the physiques between one league and the "higher tier" league.
