What are umpires taught where informing the SK & PA about player substitutions is concerned? Is this optional? Are you bound by rule to inform each opposing manager whenever one side makes a player change? What are the rules and customs in general where this is concerned?
Most umpires at the youth level should be telling the SK at least the numbers, 14 for 5. Let the coaches figure out the spelling. If the PB is within ear shot, tell them the same thing. If not, as in a pro stadium or college field, simply point the sub and they will figure it out or there are communications with the dugout.
