Question for you folks in the know. When a college coach asks for a video of the player what exactly does that mean? We live in a very rural area (probably cant get much more rural as its Kauai) so getting live looks from coaches / scouts probably just is not going to happen and considering its going to cost about 4k a pop just to get to the mainland for a select few showcases over the next 2 years Video i think is going to be important for my son.

Plays multiple positions but mainly 3rd. So, when coaches want to see video is there some sort of time limit rule? I don't think a "highlight" reel would be showing the true story but i also don't want to send a Cecil B. DeMille epic out either. Are there some sort of standards to that they want to see (maybe 10 minutes in cage, some live bats, some Fielding?)

thanks for any suggestions.

Ditto the remark about working with the coach.  You're in a unique situation.

For the video, no more than 3 minutes would be my recommendation.  For a 3B, you want to show how well he receives, transitions and throws ground balls  Set up the video so he's directly facing you.  Figure about 10 feet up the first base line.  Do 3 grounders directly at him.  3 moving to his right for a backhand.  3 moving to his left.  3 charging a slow grounder or bunt.

If he's a right handed hitter, move the camera back from the line a bit and tape him taking 15 BP swings.

Sixty yard dash is optional.  Include only if he has exceptional speed for a 3B.  You can see some examples at the Perfect Game and Skillshow websites.

Good Luck,

Cal

thanks for the replies.

HS coaching staff has changed 3 times over the past 3 years, not going to get anything from them. There are a handful of travel teams from the State, go to the obvious tournaments and nothing more. He will be a part of two of them (i think going to Arizona and Fla). The list of players from Kauai is small and my sons situation is a bit different. He is looking at and apparently already talking to High academic / engineering schools that he is interested in. Surprised to hell out of me to find out he has been emailing back and forth with MIT.

Kid is 15 and on to Trig already while taking some pre-physics classes online at Khan academy. Been playing since he was 5 has the size, mentality and skills (he hopes) to play for another 4 years after high school while studying Astrophysics.

Again, thanks for the replies. im trying to help him the best i can without draining my retirement account :}

KauaiDad -

I'll fly out and film him personally!

But until then check out an infielder I've worked with here… http://www.playinschool.com/scherzer

Also, it may interest you to know that we'll be visiting MIT, Harvard, Brown, Yale & many other Ivy & elite schools on our High Academic New England College Bus Tour.  We will do a High Academic Mid-Atlantic Tour as well.

Might be a great way for your son to see a lot of campuses in 1 trip.

In addition to tours of the academic & athletic facilities (given by the coaches from each school) we'll also run 2 workouts on each tour.

These trips are not cattle calls.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Full details can be found here… http://www.playinschool.com/bus_tour.html

Thanks again for the replies. We have looked at the school trips a few weeks ago and decided that we are going to do them but not until next year since he wants tests results in hand (only a sophmore ATM). Looks like a great time.

you would think hawaii would Be a hot spot for baseball as we can play year round, its actually the oposite, there are so many other items to keep these kids  attention baseball unfortunately is not one of them. Which is a shame since there a quite a few talented kids that play, biggest problem I see is that education and the desire to leave here for college and better themselves really is not a driving force for many. it's really hard to explain but culturally it's moremimportant to surf or paddle and for sure learn to fish. Not saying it's bad, just different then our views.

Drives me crazy and not to mention my 44 year old shoulder is taking a beating being my sons long toss partner for 8 months of the year. Heh

Interesting.  There have been a few very dominant LL All Star teams from Hawaii, but they have hailed from Oahu.  A lot more people there, plus a large number of military and ex military to coach and contribute to the baseball gene pool.  I have never noticed whether many of these kids thrive at the next levels.  But obviously quite a few from HI have made it to MLB.  Victorino and Ron Darling for starters. I am guessing the vast majority of those are from Oahu.

The Yates brothers are the only kauai residents I know of that have made it to the mlb. Oahu has over a million residents, kauai 66k. Big difference. Long odds. Would not change anything but like everywhere else we have our challenges here, positive is that if you excel here you do get recognized locally, just need  to parlay that into something more. Costs are definitely the driving force, for example just for a weekend trip from kauai to oahu you are talking a minimum of 1,500 a pair with flights, hotel rental car Food.

would not change anything though with the choices we made after 911, could not think of a better place to raise the kids.

We made a video in about 2 hours one afternoon in September.  We went to our local HS field....my son, me and his friend (cameraman).  Edited it down to 6 and a half minutes.  Hitting, pitching, SS, OF and Catcher.  Sent a bunch of emails with the link around 10pm on a Sunday to mostly D1's and a few D2's in a 5 or 6 state area.  Had 7 or 8 responses by the next morning and more since.  Roughly have were "hey come to our camp"....but the other half were "real" emails....with replies that mentioned enough that we knew they watched it.  Have had several requests for spring/summer schedules.  Not much investment for what turned out to be a pretty decent results.

KauaiDad,

Your son must be very good If he has done well against Medeiros.  We have seem Medeiros pitch against the very best prospects in the country and they all have looked completely helpless. Really, the best stuff we have seen in 20 years of watching the best pitching prospects in baseball. Our current #1 ranked prospect said after facing Medeiros, "I have never seen anything like that, he's the best I have ever seen"

So I will say with no hesitation... If your son can hit Kodi Medeiros.... Your son is a big time hitting prospect and I would like to know more about him.  In fact, everyone who scouts and recruits would like to know about him. Please email staff@perfectgame.org you might be very glad you did.

Especially as a 2016.  I'd say he's likely to be a high draft pick himself.

oh boy i hope my son does not see this, truth is he had a great day in a casual setting against him. I would not expect the same results over an extended time (or even one more time as). My son can hit but i would not even dare to say he is a "top" prospect. The kids' head while in baseball quite seriously is mainly in the books.

Next two years will tell the tale as we are finally going to visit a PG event, stanford and headfirst. until those events happen he has not been seen by a soul outside immediate coaches so we are not sure how he stacks up. Im just happy as a dad that he truly loves the game and plays it the way it should be played. (just wish his damn feet would stop growing, seems like every 6 months im buying new cleats)
