I'm at a loss for the Commonwealth. I really can't think of one guy who really stands out as head and shoulders above the rest.

Maybe Travis Thomas of Riverbend? Garrett Marin of Colonial Forge? The District has been so competitive and up and down it is hard to identify one player.

Battlefield is an easy selection. It has to be Matt Houston of Spotsy.

I'm no fan of the Free Lance-Slant newspaper and their selective sports reporting. You can fill volumes with what you don't read in it. But, you cannot argue that Houston should be their Player of the Year as well.

7-0 on the mound. He has been brutal with his bat, AND when he has crossed over to the Commonwealth District for games he has beaten them either on the mound or at the plate.

Those are my thoughts.

Blackhawk,

I agree on the Battlefield player of the year, Matt Houston, and I can see Travis Thomas maybe as the commonwealth possibility. Poor Garrett is not having a good year (2-3), maybe it goes along with the way the team is playing, but I don't think he would be in consideration. You are right there are not alot of names that burst out to the front this year in the Commonwealth with everybody playing each other so close that anything can happen on any given night.
You DEFINATELY cannot go by newspapers as they are so controlled and bias with the good ole boy network while letting coaches that inflate stats to make their players look good.
Lets just hope that the coaches, when they meet after the season to decide looking honestly at what the other teams players did against them, that the truth comes out.
Well said. A couple of good examples of the old "slant"...

When I see a guy go 0 for April then read he is hitting .400+ that is suspect. When I watch a guy give up 12 runs in ONE game, then read he has an ERA of less than 2.00, well come on. What, did the runs disappear from his stats because they came back and won the game???

The only thing you really can't dispute is wins, losses and home runs, and that is where Houston has shined. I hope he is rewarded. Great player, and more important great young man.

One side note, from what I have seen the Stafford HS lead-off hitter I think his name is Ryan Brown, looks like he is having a stellar year.
Daniel King 5-1, 39K, 8BB, 1.60 ERA, 360 BA, 2HR and he plays 1B when not pitching (He should be in consideration, but I may be bias Wink)
He was injured all last year and could'nt throw for 8 months, just proud of the way he has fought back to be able to contribute to team for his final year! Since he was hurt all last year, he didn't get a chance to go out and showcase his talents, but that gave him a chance to look at colleges that carry his field of study that he is interested in. He still is being looked at this year by 3 colleges that want him to come and play, so we will see.
Patriot District (NR): I'd be surprised if it's anyone other than Mike Kent or Bobby Wahl from West Springfield; the pitching of the two of them (Kent, Sr., is signed to Clemson; Wahl, Jr., is committed to Ole Miss) is the biggest reason why WS ran the table (14-0) in their district.

Concorde District (NR): Several players have a shot -- Ryan Williams at Westfield, John Collela at Chantilly, Mike DelBuono at Robinson and Zach Leach at Herndon, all seniors, come to mind. Perhaps Ryan Ashooh at Centreville (Jr., committed to UVa) has an outside chance, but he may need to wait a year.
Isnt the whole NR doing Player of the Year AND Pitcher of the Year? I heard that they were. While I don't really like it, I guess it does recognize more kids in the end, which can't be a bad thing.

In the Liberty, I believe that Johnny Bladel from Stone Bridge was the Player of the Year and Sean Fitzgerald from McLean was the Pitcher of the Year. Both good choices if this is correct.
The Commonwealth will be a tough decision this for player of the year. First of all whoever said Marin you have not been watching commonwealth baseball Forge is in 6 th place not to mention he gave up 12 runs in one inning. I also saw that he has a 2.00 era I'm going to have to call you out on that. I just venting a little.

Anyway I have to say for me it comes down to Ryan Brown of Stafford he is out their every game playing is tail off leads league in SB and plays great outfield if it wasn't for him Stafford would not be where they are! Had a big double to lead them over NS the other night. I know King is doing a great job on the mound for Stafford but he doesn't have hitting numbers to go along with pitching. I would also consider Jacob Gernhard of MV yes not Kyle Haynes while Kyle is a great pitcher he has two loss on the year. Gernhard has better hitting numbers. I think it will come down to who wins in tomorrow's nights playoff between the two teams. If Haynes comes out and shuts down stafford and gets the win it will help his cause.

I guess some other people have not been to a lot of Commonwealth games, 3 for 3 against Haynes the last meeting. If you go by the NS/MV Free Lance Star, whoops I didn't say that, then yes the stats may have Haynes in contention. I agree Jake Gernhardt should now be considered with the way he has been coming on in all categories. He is also a very humble a great kid. Haynes has a great bat, but era is not that good along with w-l stats, if he didn't have the relief pitching in a couple of games he would have alot more loses and less wins,

Ryan Brown has been a catalyst for the Stafford team and should be in consideration, I still say Travis Thomas of Riverbend is in the mix. The POY is what was accomplished for the WHOLE YEAR, or it is suppose to be. With all that being said it still will come down to who sells the best next week in the coaches meeting!
COMMONWEALTH:

As I’ve posted before, Ryan Brown is a super nice player and I love watching him play. He has great speed and base running ability and he can hit, I think he shares VERY similar abilities as Vince Coles from Albemarle. I am not demeaning Ryan’s ability at all, but I do not think he will be the Player of the Year in the Commonwealth.

I think the player of the year will be a pitcher. A few of the top pitchers mentioned also bring a serious stick to the plate and are mentioned as leaders in most of the statistical categories. If you've seen them play, you know they can produce and you know who they are, you don't need stats to tell you that...

Stats - You could question every stat produced, they are all affected by something else even if they are reported accurately. I’ve seen pitchers in the Commonwealth strike out 10-11 batters (against better teams) in one game and STILL lose the game due to poor defense and lack of run support. GREAT defensive plays will help a pitchers ERA and Stafford plays some great defense... You could go on and on and on with every reportable stat and argue pros and cons……

Albemarle doesn’t even report stats to the Free Lance Star, who on the current lists might not be there if Albemarle reported? I ”think” Tyler Molinaro (spelling?) from Albemarle leads the district with 5 home runs….. But does 5 home runs make the POY – NO.

Question # 1: how did the pitchers in consideration pitch against the top three teams? Did they handle the top three (Mt. View, Stafford & Albemarle)? How did they hit against the top three? Forget about the outcome; think only about the player’s contributions, offensively, defensively and from the hill.

A team finishing 6th in the district has nothing to do with this award; it’s an individual award. Riverbend finished 5th, but that should not exclude Travis Thomas, Colonial Forge finished 6th, but that should not exclude Garrett Marin. Hey if you don't think they performed that's fine, but overall team finish has nothing to do with it.

What if your team didn't face the #1 and you got the win, would your standings have possibly changed had you faced the PLAYER OF THE YEAR? What single player possessed the ability from the hill to change these standings?

These team standings could be MUCH different…

The top team award will be decided tonight! And neither of these teams (Mountain View or Stafford) reached the final game tonight because of one player, they are the two TOP TEAMS in the district. I hope I can make it, but It'll take a Little League rain out tonight for me to attend - Big Grin

One things for sure, they'll be some hurt feelings, folks who'll question the winner and the ways of the process --- but isn't that always the case?

All of the players mentioned are probably deserving, but as I noted above ---- Probably will come down to the coach with the most clout and the ability to sell his player the best.
