I live in Broward county and am trying to get some information on becoming and umpire. I've emailed a few people and have not gotten a response. I'm hoping someone on here can help me out.

We have our own umpiring association that is based out of Florida and Georgia. We could put you in contact with the people in charge.
Also, would suggest you go to an umpires school. There are several held in Florida. They're usually run by current or former MLB umpires. Of course, after watching the playoffs this year, you might think that is not quite so impressive.

What kind of umpiring do you want to do?
Professional? You must attend one of two recognized schools, Jim Evan Academy of Professional Umpiring or Wendlestedt's. If you are selected as an honor graduate, You would then attend Professional Baseball Umpire Corp. (PBUC) There would receive additional training and be ranked in order of all attendees, usually 40-50.
Then depending on the number of opennings in the Minor Leagues, you would be selected or not selected for a contract to work professional baseball.
A good book on the subjest is Roder's "The Narrowest Door in Baseball". It describes well the ordeal and chances involved in making it to the Majors as an umpire. (Umpires have less chance to make it to the bigs than players)
If you are looking to be an amateur umpire, contact a local high school AD and he can put you in touch with the orgnization that handle school ball in your area.
Training is still a good idea for amateur umpires and most associations offer some version. Evans offers a five day clinic in Kissimee, Fla beginning December 27. Evans Academy
