My fall shift-of-focus is to my soon-to-be 15 daughter. Club level s-o-c-c-e-r and HS Volleyball. Love to watch all my kids play just about anything, but GOD I miss baseball ... even if I'll have to drive to Fresno now to watch games.

Now, I appreciate futbol as much as the next person, but you folks have no idea just how physical and agressive U15 girls are on the pitch. And what constitutes a foul, yellow card, or red card in the eyes of the ref are totally inconsistent ... particularly here in CA where some geographic areas practice a pronouncedly more physical style of play by both coaches and refs. Just from this weekend, watched an opposing player go sprinting at one of our players and clothslined her while she was in mid-air heading the ball ... yellow card. The opposing player got another yellow when she was high-fived by her teammates for the giving out the hit and the coach was given a yellow for congratulating her. Another opposing player ran up behind and delivered a blindside hit to one of our girls in the back with two fists ... yellow card, to both players. Another one of our girls got taken down hard, out of bounds, 20 yds away from the ball simply while trying to make a run into space ... no foul. Our player and an opposing player got tangled up tackling the ball, both went down in a heap, ref calls a foul on our player ... OK, call that one either way ... then the opposing player untangles herself, gets up, watches the ref turn around and walk away then cleats our player in the stomach while she's still on the ground ... while the ref isn't looking. Fortunately the AR saw it and it resulted in a red card and a send-off, finally.

Volleyball ... what a strange sport. Points are scored regardless of who's serving, High fives and group hugs after every missed point or mistake, and there's substitutions on practically every other point to put in specific blockers, servers, etc., for each situation. Bizzare rules on where each player must stand in front, behind, left, right with respect to each other on each serve, then they can move someplace else on the court after the ball is served. Teams switch sides, including benches, bags, fans in the bleachers ... everything ... after each 'game' of a match. I gave up trying to figure it out, just knew the girls seemed to be happy all the time.

I take a limited schedule of fall ball games....mostly youth rec level as training games for youth umpires....did a double header last week with 6 partners......rotated them in and out of the bases and plate...great way to train new umpires....and give the fall ball teams some free umpiring....

I will watch my sons college fall scrimmage games.....clean and replace any worn umpire gear and uniforms....

I have started back into the gym and have resumed my ever losing battle against age and time...

After maintaining a 70+ game a year pace for quite a few years, Ive come to appreciate the off season for a short while....

I belive it was Rogers Hornsby who they asked what do you do in the off season?...to whitch he replied " I stare out the window and pray for spring....
Just when I thought it was off-season, my son got invited onto Baseball Northwest's Fall Scout Team. 15 more games there plus we're scheduled to go the the Junior Fall Classic.

Then it's off-season. Really! No! I'm serious! (OK, except for cage time, pitcher training, long-toss, nutrition sessions, plyometrics, weight-lifting at the gym......)

Baseball is a wonderful drudgery.
