By union and management agreement there is a system that combines both performance and simple rotation. Eventually, all umpires will get post season assignments.

That said, replays, questec and it's successor indicate that ML umpires are correct 95% of the time.

Not too shabby. That's an average any manager would love to have.

The problem is, no one remembers the right calls. But the incorrect ones get replayed over and over and over and there are those who believe a blown call cost their team a game.

Actually, and to some, surprisingly, Angel Hernandez has consistently been rated the number one or two ball strike umpires by Questec.

Surveys of players are circumspect. For example, Joe West has been in both the top ten and bottom ten in the same year in player and manager surveys. What's that tell us? Love him or hate him, eh?
