Just to confirm and add to what CoachB25 said:
Often people don't realize that this is a privately owned, not-for-profit site. The owner (me) and the moderators (like CoachB25) do not get paid for their work running the site.
Our hosting costs are currently around $800 per month, because of the complex forum software involved in a site like this. When I first took over ownership of the site almost 3 years ago, I paid the expenses out of pocket for about 6 months (around $200/month at that time). But as we have grown, our sponsors, advertisers, and some very thoughtful members have chipped in to cover costs. So those banners you see at the top of the forum, and the smaller ads on the side, are keeping it free for members.
Posting notices about events falls into a gray area. I have always welcomed announcements about events that would interest our members. But I also hope that companies who post about their events AND charge money for them, would realize the economics of this site, and chip in to help pay expenses. To tell you the truth, that usually does not happen. I don't honestly remember when a company has donated without also having an ad spot or sponsor banner. (Except for Perfect Game, who has always preferred to just be a quiet donor, but I have insisted that they have a banner presence so that members have some idea of their generousity. I could not keep the bills for the site paid without PG's help.)
I think it's okay for credible organizations to post about baseball events that would benefit our members. But they should:
#1 Be honest when posting, indentifying themselves as the event host, not pretending to be an unbiased customer, etc.
#2 Consider donating to the site or becoming a paid advertiser if they are charging money for their events.
(Donate)CoachB25, thanks for taking the time to investigate that incident, and thank you for all you do!
