There should be a rule in all HS-age baseball. You swear on the field, you get ejected.

I'm sick and tired of sitting amongst siblings, parents and grandparents and hearing a runner scream the F word as they're thrown out at first.

Disclaimer:  My kids are not exempt from this. They've both done it. After the game I quietly told them if it happens again, I'm leaving and never coming back. Worked.

In my opinion, it comes from the parents. If they curse, their kids will. I made it a point to not curse in front of my kids. Still don't much, unless I'm really emphasizing a point - and they are 17 & 20. I never see my kids curse around me and certainly not out loud during a sporting event. On the contrary, I have heard parents tell stories and laugh about their kids cursing - and I hear it on the field from the kid.

Starts at home - IMHO.

Bulldog 19,

Watched a lot of HS ball games over the last 10 years, and I’ve yet to see a player tossed for cursing. Not being on the field and not being privy to what’s said out there beyond earshot, I can’t say how many times warnings have been issued.

My personal feeling is, I don’t like cursing of any kind in places where little ears or mixed company can hear it, but wattayagonnado? Go to a game of any professional sport and you’re likely gonna hear the participants cursing like sailors on a weekend pass.

We typically sit near home plate -either slightly to the 1B side or 3B side depending on whether the team is home or away.  Unless the "cussing" is right in the plate area, I rarely can hear it if it comes from anywhere past the pitcher's mound.  And even around the plate, it's hard (for me anyway) to pick up.

Those that are "cussing" such that you can hear it from the stands really must be vocal!

I don't recall any ejections specifically for inappropriate language.  They've all been for other reasons - cleating the catcher in the chest, throwing helmets, throwing bats after a strikeout call, etc.  There may have been some language tossed about, but most times no one in the fans could really hear it.

I can say I've heard far more inappropriate language from the fan side than I have coming from the field.  Especially during HS football games.

Hit them in the wallet.   My youngest (rising high school junior) has developed potty mouth since the high school baseball season ended this year.  When he wasn't starting on the mound, he was in the dugout practicing his craft.

Coincidently, I was cleaning up some old files on my computer last month, and found this....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI3Y1auTFpU.    So, we implemented a swear jar for him....an expensive swear jar at $5 a pop.  We started off strong with $35 in the first few weeks, but there have been no contributions in about 2 weeks.  The jar will remain in the kitchen until school starts.

We tried this years ago when some "blue language" surfaced with our sons: at dinner that night, I asked my wife to "pass the F'ing mashed potatoes" and the "F'ing butter", followed by this "So how was your F' ing day?" That was as far as I could get with a straight face but after the initial shock, the boys got the point.....
