Very good game at Powhatan this evening. Interesting in that both teams used one of their top two respective starters despite it being a non-district contest. After 2, it was 0-0 and looked like we were destined for a pitching duel between Cosby's Travis McQueen and Powhatan's Crone (sorry don't know his first name).

All of a sudden we had all sorts of offense in the middle innings. For Cosby, Luke Lowery hit one of the more impressive HR's you'll ever see at the HS level. Not one of those big flies, more of a cannon shot liner to left. Cleared the fence at the 340' mark, went another 40' and hit a backup screen about 25' high. I think it might've gone 420' if the screen hadn't been in the way. It was still moving like a rocket when it sprung back off the screen. After a hit, Garrett Birnbaum hit a HR to straightaway CF, which if you've been to Powhatan you know is quite a poke as well.

Powhatan did not roll over, though. After it got to 9-6 in Cosby's favor, Powhatan got a couple of hits and an RBI grounder to make it 9-7, then Luke Scherzer homered to LCF to tie it up. The next inning, Tyler Allen's 3-run shot over the scoreboard let Powhatan pull away. Tanner Phillips and Joe Manion combined to shut out Cosby over the final 3 1/3 innings and that was that.

We had a discussion in another thread about where the top private school teams in the Richmond area, Benedictine and St. Christopher's, belonged with respect to the top 10 regional polls.

I realize that Powhatan gets to run up its record against some pretty hapless opposition, but when you show you can put up 14 runs in 6 turns at bat against one of the region's top teams, I'm thinking maybe we need to make some room in the top 10 for our local AA powerhouse.
I looked up the story, apparently she was a month away from graduating from Manchester and attending Virginia Tech. S****r captain and ranked in the top 15 of her class. Apparently she was at Cosby's prom down on Lake Gaston. I didn't know schools held proms off campus. The articles say that speed and alcohol weren't factors, so my guess would be that the driver fell asleep. I know that was a huge fear of mine in high school after staying out all night at prom/after prom party. Just a sad story
Unfortunately that stretch of 360 is not the safest road you'll see. Lots of knolls, road goes up and down a lot, not a lot of shoulder, many curves. An inexperienced driver, driving at night, with a car load of kids who were probably having a happy time and potentially posing constant distractions .... I have no idea how this actually happened, but they say it wasn't speed or alchohol. Just having driven that road more than a few times, I can see how it could easily happen.
