I was just curious if any states have high school limits on the amount of practice hours in a week or day.  I know that college does which sparked my thought about HS.  Today was the 1st day of practice for the year and a local HS had a four hour practice.  Not really sure why it is so long but this seems to be common with this coach.  There are only 40 total kids so its not a numbers deal.

I think part of the problem is that we only have 11 days before the 1st game and their is a lot to cover in practice.

The kids don't get home till 7pm, Then eat and have time to do homework then get to bed at a reasonable hour and get up by 6:30 to do it again. Most parents don't have that tough of a schedule.

If only college schedules were that light...

i worried about this when my son was a freshman, but found his grades held or went up during season.  He learned discipline, that's for sure, and has no social life in season to speak of. Then again, with he work out schedule he doesn't go out a whole lot in the off season either.

Once the season starts he will play games at least 3 days a week, and will practice 2 to 3 additional days. I think the pitcher/catcher conditioning week has a time limit on practices, but I don't believe there is a limit after that.

In his school baseball is not a class, so it is strictly after hours.

He gets into the rhythm of the season and now doesn't think a whole lot about it. He plans ahead if he has a paper due during the week, and works on it the weekend before.

There will be some late nights during the spring, though.

He is continuing to play in college next year, and says that he believes he needs the structure of baseball to do his best academically. He has come a long way from the panic he experienced his freshman year of high school.

I browsed through the VHSL handbook and could not find a practice restriction per se, but most HS coaches usually use common sense.  The only restriction I could find was no practice or games on Sunday.  If he had 40 kids at "practice", that sounds more like "tryouts" or a combined JV-Varsity practice.  In that case, I could understand if it ran a little longer than normal

My son is now at a DII JUCO.   According to him, HS practice was a breeze.  J H has it right.   In the early fall, they had two-a-days with conditioning at 6 am and "practice" from 2:30 to 6 pm.  Same thing in the spring.  And unlike HS, how you practice during the week often determines if you play on the weekend - especially if you are not a returning player.  Have to work twice as hard to make the travel squad - his JUCO only takes 25 players out of 35 on the active roster to away games - that's all the bus will hold.

Throughout his HS varsity career, on non-game days practice started at about 3:30 and usually went to about 6 pm. Early in the season, practice sometimes went as late as 7 pm as the coaching staff was trying to evaluate players for positions.  And they practiced 6 days a week including Saturday mornings.  Spring Break?  No such thing for baseball - they usually had a few games that week or a tournament.

Compared to my HS years where I played football, getting off by 6 pm is a treat.  It was common for my HS coach to run practice from 3:30 to about 7-7:30.  I often didn't didn't get home until 8:30, followed by dinner and homework until I fell asleep.  Then get up at 6 am and do it all again.

I talked with another HS coach at a different school than my son goes and they went from 2:45 - 4:00 and then 6-9 yesterday.

The problem we have up here in the PNW is rain and most schools share the gym with the other spring sports so the times for practice can be late.  Next week they will do a 6:30 am to 7:30 am practice followed by the evening one.

My son would practice 6plus hrs a day if he could. As long as homework gets done I have no problem with him keeping busy with baseball. Keeps him away from the video games and having too much time on his hands to get into trouble. We find time for church and extended family, so things are good here. Having all 40 there at once is interesting. Wonder how much each player is being seen/helped.
