If you are not watching the news, a bridge collapsed over the Mississippi River during rush hour today...please pray for those involved as there is a report of a school bus loaded with children on the bridge at that time.

What terrible news! Like many, my first thought is, was this an act of terrorism?

JT…..According to news reports,

“The bus had just crossed the bridge before it crumpled into pieces, and broadcast reports indicated the children on the bus exited out the back door.”

My deepest thoughts and prayers to all, during this tragic event.

My thoughts and prayers are with all those personally affected by this tragedy...

Tonight, I am consumed w/thinking about all the wonderful/loving people I met/lived by during my 6 years in Apple Valley,MN but most of all I am thinking about our own MNMom and hope each and every one of her family members and friends are safe....

Prayers are sent from your friend in Texas.....
My wife is in the Twin Cities with our youngest daughter for a softball tournament. She had crossed this bridge around 11:00am today and was going to cross it again at 4:00pm, but she got stuck in a wrong lane and had to find another route across the river.

Obviously we are grateful for not being involved with this. Our prayers go out to all of those who were involved...those lost and injured...as well as all of the emergency workers.

For those of you who are interested...here is what this span looked like prior to it collapsing today...

I was driving on my way to meet woodman's lovely wife Play Baseball for dinner, when I heard the shocking news on the radio. 35W is a major, major freeway in the Minneapolis area and we have all driven over that bridge many times. It is near our younger son's college (University of Minnesota).

My husband was trying to track down our younger son by cell phone because he was in the vicinity of the bridge at about that time (on his way to the Twins game with a friend...they made it safely but noticed a ton of emergency vehicles suddenly going by). What a time for son to leave his cell phone in the truck so that we couldn't reach him!

At least 50 vehicles were involved. There are 7 known dead and at least 60 injured as of the latest report I heard, but there are submerged vehicles in the river which have not been reached yet, amongst the broken concrete.

The school bus landed right side up and all of the kids on board were rescued with only minor injuries.

Julie, I am so very thankful that you and yours are safe. I was following this story last night and of course, I thought of all of you.

Annette, Had no idea that you were over that way and I'm grateful you all weren't on that bridge!

My thoughts and prayers for all those directly and indirectly affected by this tragedy. cry
Thank you all so very much for your concern and relief.

It was surreal to have been in Minneapolis that day, to have been on the bridge that late morning, and to have missed the return trip back to the tournament that afternoon on the bridge. I wonder where I would have been had my daughter's game been scheduled to start at 8:00 rather than 6:15.

There were many miracles that day, not the least that only a handful of people were killed.

The softball tournament was played in the northern suburb of Brooklyn Park. Kelly's game started a little bit late at 6:30, but it was eventually postponed due to the tremendous thunderstorm that began at 6:30. Giant lightning all around. Incredible amounts of rain. The bridge collapsed at 6:05 and due to a teammate's family member in Louisville, we knew of the collapse before our game began. Once the skies opened, all we could think about was how extraordinarily treacherous the rescue effort would be in the major lightning storm. Miraculously the skies didn't even drizzle just about 12 miles south, so the rescue efforts took place without that nightmare, too.

But sadly one member of our very large baseball family was one of the first victims. Patrick Holmes had just retired this year from the Saint Paul Saints to coach his son in T-ball. He had played for the Saints for many years. I heard on the radio that the Saints were retiring his number but I can't pull up any information on that. He had graduated from Mankato State University in the early 1990's.

The bridge was jam packed with cars and people. It really is a miracle that so few are still lost and even fewer killed. And that the bus wasn't delayed by two seconds. Those kids and the other witnesses need prayers. Thank you.
