Ryan Westmoreland (a Red Sox top prospect) is one of the toughest and most talented kids you will ever find on a baseball field. My son got to know him and they developed a friendly rivalry on the field last summer. During a game late last summer at Lowell Mass, my son got a hold of one that I thought listening to it on the radio was a home run or at minimum a double or a triple. The Sox leftfielder never gave up on the ball and crashed full force into the fence and crumpled in a heap while my son circled the bases. It took several seconds for the umpires and trainers to get out there but they found the ball still in Westmoreland's mitt - much to my chagrin. The play ended his summer as it broke his collar-bone. I remember thinking what a hard-nosed player.

This morning I was perusing the Boston Globe as I wanted to see what their take on the Cavs-Celtics game yesterday and I came across this devastating news. Please send your good wishes out to this young man:

Concern evident for Sox’ Westmoreland

My son is/was a HS teammate of Ryan. He is a great kid from a great family. He is a future 30-30 guy with the Red Sox and we hope and expect that will not change.
Ryan is a tough kid who has been dealt some tough breaks lately but will do well. He is strong and has great family and friend backing. We are praying for him in RI. Seems to be a state curse lately....Baldelli and now Ry.
Thank God they found the AVM (this is also known as an Arterial Venous Malformation) before something terrible happened.

AVMs tend to 'blow' eventually and the results are generally devastating to the young person that has an AVM rupture.

Hopefully the surgery goes well and that he can make a full recovery. I have seen quite a few folks fully recover from these surgeries although I don't know of any that were professional baseball players. I don't know how this will affect his career.

Thankfully this young man went through a successful procedure, hopefully our thoughts & prayers will help him get through this all important one-two week period.
