A player in our program was attempting a bunt and the ball deflected off the bat and caught him just wrong. Shattered eye socket, still too much swelling to determine anything else...
"They are inserting a metal plate for the fracture and reattaching the eye to the muscle. He has some damage to the optic nerve but they won't know for awhile how his sight will be."
The Doctors said they were pleased with how the operation went. They repaired the fracture and soft tissue damage. His vision is blurry and he keeps the eye shut most of the time. He is having light sensitivity issues but in general is handling the discomfort. He seems in good spirits but still has a long road to recovery. We are all hoping the vision will come back to 100% but he needs time to heal before we will know for sure.
While the swelling has subsided and the young man has resumed more or less normal activity his surgeon believes permanent damage was done. The family is seeking a second opinion. Anyone with knowledge of a Retina Specialist, prefferably on the East Coast, please either post or PM me.
Dr. Julia Haller did surgery on my mom a few years ago for macular holes. She used to be at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. Can't quickly tell from this new place whether she's teaching or practicing, but I would definitely find out. Very highly regarded.
