I don't post much here anymore, but hoping for some prayer support for this young man....

A freshman pitcher from Odessa, now playing at Wayland Baptist University, is hospitilized recovering from emergency brain surgery in Lubbock after being struck in the head by a linedrive off a BBCOR bat yesterday.

Wayland Baptist Pitcher

Please say a prayer for his complete recovery.

Prayers go out. Coached against Mikey in the 2009 playoffs. He's a great ball player and seems like a great kid. Hopefully he can make a full recovery.

There are some inherent dangers in the game of baseball. It doesn't matter what rule making body decides regarding what bats can be used at what level...the danger will always be there for the pitcher. The only way to truly make it safer is to either move the mound back, or make the pitcher wear a hockey style mask. I don't think either of those will happen so I will try and teach my pitchers to finish in as good of a fielding position as possible. Pitching inside a little more wouldn't hurt either.
I am pretty sure the point of BBCOR and any future equipment changes/regulations isn't to eliminate ALL unfortunate incidents, because this is impossible. I would assume the goal is to drastically reduce the chance and lower these cases because the exit speeds are now controlled.

To say it is the answer is misleading because I am not sure its intention was to eliminate an uncontrolled outcome. In football there have been equipment measures taken each decade but the risk is known each time a player steps on the football field just as a hitter in the batter's box or a pitcher on the mound. It is a part of the game, it can't be eliminated. It is scary and certainly unfortunate when something like this happens.
The coach made comments about bringing in wooden bats but you can still have pitcher injuries, as every year in the ML's it seems a few pitchers are still injured by batted balls. Then you've also got to worry about shattered bats. I'm not against wooden bats but I agree with the others that baseball has some inherent dangers and they are just psrt of the game.
