For those that have been here before, we would love some input into reading into pre reads...

Now that all 4 sessions of HF in NY are over, we understand the pace may pick up based on experience here. Meanwhile, 2017 has excellent grades and top scores so there is no question to us as to whether he is academically admissable anywhere -- he should be able to garner acceptance anywhere (of course with today's acceptance rates I am not saying he would be accepted, just that he is above the line anywhere he might apply).  He has conveyed his grades and scores to the numerous schools he remains interested in.

So far 3 schools have specifically told him they want to do a pre read, and in 2 cases he has been "greenlighted by admissions" while he awaits the results of the 3rd school.  Clearly a pre read is a good sign.  2 of these 3 schools are in the NESCAC, however he is interested/has had ongoing conversations with other NESCAC schools but has not been asked specifically to do a pre read.

Questions for the experienced D3 people on the board:

1. Is the timing such that if he has NOT been asked to have a pre read by the other Nescac schools it means they are less interested in him?  Sort of a double negative, but should he interpret this as less interest?

2. Because of this grades and scores, is it possible that a coach would not do a pre-read of him since they know he would clearly be admissable?

3. Do they ever take your scores and transcripts and submit them without telling you (through many of the recruiting questionnaires the coaches have this info already)?

4. Do all schools do pre reads?

Thank you for your insights and input in advance.

My son was heavily recruited by the Ivy's & some other High Academics, starting spring of Sophomore year.  After Sophomore year he was asked to complete the athletic questionnaires every semester thru Senior year.  We asked the Univ. of Penn Admissions recruiter @ a college fair in CA why this was requested.  It is Standard @ their school, once coach is interested in a player, coach is required to submit the grades & test scores to the admissions office to ensure the player will clear admissions when it really matters.  YES, your grades & test scores move without you always knowing about it.

As a side note, It has been our experience to always have a pre-read with admissions before you waste your time on an official or unofficial visit.  Trust me, you will literally run out of weekends Junior & Senior Year to take the SAT/ACT repeatedly, play Scout Ball in the Fall,  attend Major events like PG or the Arizona Classic,  still keep your HS, GPA intact,  socialize with your HS friends @ Football games like Homecoming, and get ready as... many kids get their Wisdom teeth pulled JR or SR year ~ another weekend gone~ then factor in the Dead No Contact Periods per NCAA rules..........plan & prioritize  accordingly

I would say less interested at this time, or they don’t know who he is. There is roughly two months and a half left before ED apps will be needed for coach supported recruits. Lots of time for a D3 college to get interested in a recruit.

In my experience with high academic D3s, no.....not if the coach is serious about the recruit. The coach is making a recommendation to the Admissions Committee who will make a final determination. The pre-read is part of that process.  It is a good thing for recruit and coach to be “pre-read” in advance so there are no surprises.

In my experience this never happened nor have I heard of it happening.

In my experience with high academics and assisting other with their search the answer is yes.  I've not heard of a school not doing a pre-read for a coach supported recruit.  BTW...While the recruit is going through the pre-read it is an ideal time to initiate a dialog with a Financial Officer.

"BTW...While the recruit is going through the pre-read it is an ideal time to initiate a dialog with a Financial Officer. "

This is important. Many players rely solely on the coach. It is also important to build relationships with others involved in the process. While the coach may be able to help get you into the school, he may have no pull when it comes to finances.

We were able to get more favorable financial package's from the schools where we had developed other relationships. Does your son have other interests? My son sang in choir and was a tenor. When on campus visits, he took the time to talk to the choir director. I always reached out to his financial officer to ask questions about the process. So many of the financial officers never hear from a recruit until the financial package's come out. Try and to develop that relationship early. They are more willing to help someone through the process if they know you, and showed interest early.

My son did not apply to the highest academic schools and each coach was sure he would get in on his own. But we still did a pre-read to see what the finances might look like. I stayed in touch during the process and it may have helped when the financial packages came out, and I started dealing with that part of the process.
