My conclusions after my daughter's college search was the private schools, while more expensive, also offer more aid. Public schools, while less expensive, tend to offer less aid. The net out of pocket wasn't much different for her academic situation. Don't rule out private schools simply based on gross tuition/housing costs you see posted on their website.
During our recruiting period we were advised to also NOT count out private schools because of cost. As it turns out state schools must look at local (in state) talent because they are less costly due to the in state vs out of state tuition. This difference does not excist in most, if not all private schools.
We ended up at a small California private school for about the same price as going to AZ or ASU thanks to the generosity of the private funding. The smaller, academically focused school is a much better fit in our case and 4 years of starting in the infield is a bonus. Final word is "Its all about the FIT" but leave all your options open, and keep up the grades so you can take advantage of a situation that may come along.
I agree about making sure the school is a good fit. My son was offered a great opportunity to a top D3 school. After the official visit,he felt the school didn't feel right or fit "him", even though he loved the coaches(they loved him) and provided his major.Needless to say, we were shocked, but it was his choice and he's now looking at schools alot differently.
