My son was released 3 days before leaving for spring training. "Numbers" also. Unfortunately, he had two surgeries on his groin and hip that caused him to miss two complete seasons which was probably the real reason.

He worked out for a couple of teams and they liked him. They wanted to see him pitch in the independent leagues and stay healthy for a month. We were videotaping a bullpen when his groin injury flared up again. The next day, he called his agent and told him he was retiring and was going to start college (Using the MLB scholarship)

For the people who have the wonderful choice to make in going to college or signing a pro contract, this is one of the scenarios that we took into consideration.

My son had no history of any injuries at all. If he would have gone to college, the same injuries would have happened. He would never have had the chance to play professional ball and would not have 4 years of his college paid. You can't worry about injuries ending your career but you have to factor that possibility into your decision. He was fortunate and made the right choice for him.

He is looking forward to starting college now and puttin his full effort into it.

Son had the same decision to make out of HS, Pro or College.
Choose to attend College which was the best decision for him.
As I'm not sure he would of went back to school if it did not work in the Pro's.
Injury's can happen and do happen at anytime in a players career.
Having that back-up plan in place is a must.
You make decision's in life and hopefully you make them with No Regrets.
I believe that is the key, no regrets in your decision.
And things will work out fine.
Good luck to your son.

Our son had the same decision. He chose college. Got hurt in college, came back from injury. Had the choice again after junior season. Went back for senior season instead and got to play in the CWS and completed his degree. Made far less money signing out of college than he would have signing out of HS...or even after junior year in college.

If he would've played pro ball out of HS and had the same injury, he likely wouldn't be playing any more today...playing career would've been shortened.

I have asked him several times if he regrets his decisions. Without one second of hesitation, the answer is no. None. In fact, he says he wouldn't have wanted to miss all that he experienced as a college baseball player, especially as a senior.

Everyone has their reasons. There is no right answer for all. Its all a matter of perspective. I'm most happy for those that are happy with the decisions they make. Thats when you know you made a good one! Glad yours feels the same way from the other side of the fence wvmtner. Wink
