The Minnesota Twins are doing a local tryout camp for free at the local minor league affiliate complex very soon, and I had a few questions.

I am only 16, so I cannot be signed, so what can the organization do to me if they think I have performed well or have potential?

If I perform poorly, will the scouts there jump all over everything I did wrong, or will they find my strengths and weaknesses accordingly? Everyone tells me I'm going to look terrible going up against 20 year olds, but I honestly don't care if I'm the worst person there, I just want the experience and the chance to see if I have it or not. Even if I don't, I enjoy playing baseball anyway.

I talked with my high school coach, and he said that since it is an open tryout, they are mostly looking for arms more than bats, is this true?

How can I be informed on my performance? I know the 20-80 scale exists, but how will I be able to find out how the scouts thought I performed after the tryout?

Any responses are gladly appreciated. I'm very confused about this, I just want to attend and play to the best of my ability. If I don't have what they are looking for and I gave it my all, so be it.

Hello Upstate NY;
From your message, you have considered all aspects of this pro tryout.

Listen to instincts and go to the tryout, as it will be another experience in your lifetime of baseball. Please ask the scouts their opinion of your skills and what you can do to "improve". They will respect your questions. They want to help.

Please tell me your experience and feeling after this tryout. Tell me "what you learned"

Most Pro Camps operate on the same format. It is worth the experience to go to one so you know what to expect. The scouts are there to find prospects but it is hard to get them to give constructive comments. They have a job to do and if it is busy they will rush the non prospects through their paces.
They look for hitters as well as pitchers. Once they have put you through the skill tests, they usually hold back a number of guys to get a better look. If they see you as a ML prospect they will have you fill out a card with the relevant details. They rarely follow up but if you keep performing and improve they may follow you but you really have to be outstanding for that to happen. I have seen a few guys signed at these camps but very few.
Some scouts may take a few minutes with you to discuss your skill level. They are alway polite and would never dump on you. I have seen some painful performances at these camps and they just rush these guys through.
Go to the camp and learn from it. Hopefully it won't be too busy and the scouts will bge able to talk to you.
I a lot of my teammates are going to the Twins tryout tomarrow. Unfortantly I can't because I have a commintment to another team, and we have a playoff game. But, not only will pro scouts be their, college scouts will be to. I know Ithaca will be there. The pro scouts will keep you in mind and pass the word about you to other colleges.

By the way, if you didn't know, their is a try out for the Phillies at Dwyer Stadium in mid August.
