rocketson1 is 22 and a college graduate; he quit playing college ball years ago to concetrate on becoming a doctor. He has now decided he wants to play baseball instead (he is a 6'4" RHP).

He started training for it in earnest about a year ago, and recently went to an independent league tryout where he was throwing 88-90. This was his first time pitching and he had thrown very little this spring due to problems finding a catcher.

He has started pitching once per week in the local woodbat league (mostly college players) and would like to attend the pro tryouts this summer. The problem is that the closest tryout camp during which he will be available is a 15 hour drive and money is a concern. My questions are: is there any other way to tryout for a pro team, and is there anything else he should be doing to prepare?

I'll be interested in hearing any reply's to your post. My sons situation is somewhat different but he's looking for the same end result as yours. He just finished up his college career and did well (Central Region Gold Glove) but hasn't gotten any interest from pro scouts. He is determined to push forward and do it the hard way but from what I've seen so far most of the Independent League tryouts have already taken place. Hopefully someone here can shed some light.
One option for rocketson1 is to call the local pro team. No matter the level. AAA,AA,A Rookie, And talk to the pitching coach and ask if there is a good time to talk for a bit.

It's pretty simple, 6"4" and touches 90.... He will make an effort to see him throw a pen. Maybe before the teams practice or on an off day. He would not want to miss out a chance to at least look at him.

Much harder for Plash3. But there are pro try outs much closer than 15 hours. But you need to go to any you can. It just takes one person to like what they see to get a chance. And that person my be 15 hours away.

Have him call up the local Indy League teams. Many of them will have players coming in throughout the entire season. Yeah, the main tryouts may be over, but the teams are always looking at players.

The team I worked with last year it seemed like we had one or two players trying out almost on a daily basis. They'd have players come in and work out during BP.
