What should you do if a umpire (fielding ump) starts cursing at a player (pitcher)...and I mean "BAD"....the player was trying to calm down a teammate over a call made in the field (at 3rd base)...the player simply said "don't worry about it, its a make up call"....then the ump starts saying things to the player while he was back on the mound...almost as if to dare him to say anything else, so he could toss the player in question out...thank goodness the player didn't say anything else...what should one do about this??....Yes this was in a D-II college game

Cursing, in and of itself, by coaches, players and umpires, at the NCAA level is not uncommon. However, cursing AT or ABOUT a player, coach or umpire, particularly when the word is used as a noun, is unacceptable.

The umpire in question should be reported to the conference assigner.

That said, most conference assigners tell their umpires that attacks on integrity are ejectionable offenses. You can question my eyesight, knowledge of the rules, and is some cases, even my judgement. You cannot question my integrity and stay in the game.

Accusations of make-up calls are such attacks. I will issue one warning and eject on the next occurence. I will not, however, bait a player to repeat the comment.

I have used words some consider cursing in rare instances at the NCAA level. I had player at Stanford a few years back who would step out of the box, make a comment or two to me, then spend at least 30 seconds preening, swinging, adjusting this and that after every pitch at every at bat. I had no problem telling him that that needed to stop and he needed to "get the hell back in the box."

I have yet to meet a college player that was offended by that kind language.

I have never used the "F" word and other language I have heard coahces use during a game.

You should sit back, let it happen, and thank your lucky stars that the world is full of idiots like this who volunteer themselves up as training material for our kids. Sounds like this particular kid passed this particular test with flying colors.

Your coach sounds like my kind of guy

Saturday I was at a college tournament basketball game and in the first two minutes the refs had missed a number of calls getting the Asst Coach really fired up--the ref came by him and told him real loud that he had just had about enough from him.
The Head Coach heard him and replied " If you guys made the right calls you would not have to hear from him"--with that came a "T" for the Head Coach
Just found out that the Umpire was suspended...the 3rd base coach for the other team heard and saw everything, he turned the ump in to the conference commissioner...I feel justice was served, also come to find out he made a verbal threat to the kid also, good job by the ball player to ignore such stupidity and play on...case closed

Good move by the assigner.

I currently know five current conference assigners and I believe each would have taken the same action.

There are people out there that love to paint us all with the same broad brush. We dont't need umpires out there like this to help them out.
The job at this level is tough enough.
