Let's get away from picking players by position. It does not identify the best 12 players. We are not fielding an all star team to play a mid-season game or post season game.

Quite frankly, some players that may or will be listed as the best at "their position" are not among the best 15, 20 or 24 players in a given district or area. Additionally, many players who play one position could easily play and excel at another position, but their coach or team needs them at a different position. It does a disservice to the best/superior players, especially many shortstops, centerfielders and pitchers.

Let's identify the best 12 (or whatever number you prefer) players regardless of position.

Gato,

I was following the format similar to the end of the season “SED All District first team, ect.” That being said, I agree that it doesn’t always identify the best overall players but I am curious to hear “your” opinions on who “you” thought would be identified as the best at that position.
When I use “you” and “your,” I mean to say everyone that has a knowledgeable opinion.
ofs10,

not sure who the top 12 or so players will be in 2010. I have my list of the 2009 top players, but that is old news. Just trying to get the best players identified/recognized rather than an artifical list by position. Last year, the league (i.e. the coaches) did not identify the top 12 players. Additionally, longevity or senority seemed to play a part in the decision making process. Let's recognize the best 12 players on the first team, and the next 12 players on the second. No duplications, no lifetime achievement awards, no awards by position.

As for 2010, let's wait and see who plays the best on the field. Play ball!
The shortstop pick last year in the SED is a great illustration of the problems with voting by position. The coaches voted by positions and omitted one of the top players from the first team. (In fact, they omitted two or three others who deserved to be on the first team). While we can debate who was the better shortstop, most would probably agree that both players were in the top twelve players in the SED last year. (Togdawg and Redbird, I suspect Billy Godwin at ECU has a similar opinion). Why not vote for the best players?
The list of the 12 "best players" is just as arbitrary and capricious as any other list, so just do it for fun or don't. I don't know "GF" but if you don't want to answer his question with a list by position, don't. Making a list of 12 players where 5 are pitchers, 4 are shortstops, and 3 are catchers isn't any better. Even in the Big Leagues it isn't "fair" that any second baseman gets into the All-Star game since ANY shortstop could outplay him at second. Just start a new topic. It's almost time to play ball, so good luck with all the preseason work, guys!
I read what you said, redbird, and my post was not directed at you. El gato posted a couple of times that GF's question wasn't a viable topic, and I was just giving my opinion. I think that there is too much "rating" of kids anyway. There are less and less places for kids to be kids, and the ball field was always a safe haven for me to be a kid and get away from "adult" responsibilities. I don't remember my individual awards nearly as much as the feeling I got from competing on the field. "All-(fill in the blank)" teams seem to bother parents and coaches more than the kids themselves. Once again, it's my opinion and it doesn't seem to be shared by most out there.
