We are now in the Summer season and becomes important for the young player to team "himself".

Many years ago, Red Sox playing Yankees. Yogi at bat, Ted Williams in LF. Yogi cannot pull the Boston pitcher, he fouls off 3 pitches, then he hits a "line drive toward the LF line. Hopefully a double, however Ted Williams makes the catch.

Ted Williams now At bat the next inning. Yogi say "how in the hell did you make that catch".

Williams said "Yogi proper thinking"!!!!

players use your time on the field for "common sense" and "proper thing". Be a student of the game.

That is an interesting story. I always read that Ted was relatively indifferent towards non hitting baseball activities not involving hitting (especially defense) including him doing  swing imitations in the outfield. But May be that was more of a myth.

Dom;

prior to the Area Code games, I coordinated the MLSB camp in Santa Rosa and invited the scouts for a "barbee" after the camp.From the group discussions the concept of the Area Code games were created.

One scout Charlie Silveria former Yankees catcher. He was "teased" by the other scouts, Charlie you have 8 WS rings and one time at bat. Of course, Yogi was #1. Charlie and Ralph Houk would debate who was #2.

As always, I asked Charlie about Ted. After he was traded to Detroit and catching regular, they played Boston. Ed Rommel was the umpire. Ted was "on deck" and "twisting" and "churning" his bat making the Tiger's pitcher nervous. The Boston batter is out and Williams "jumps" into the batter's box. The 1st pitch is "down the middle". Rommel signal "ball one".

Charlie turns slightly with displeasure. Rommel say "shut up, Charlie, the fans came to watch Williams HIT, not you catch"!

True Story!!!!!!
