Actually, in connection with pitching, I have heard a modification to how you describe it. There, the idea is not to think about pulling the glove back to your body but rather pulling your body to the glove. That keeps the momentum toward the plate and avoids the possibility of the glove shoulder moving back as the throwing shoulder rotates forward.
Old school teach. (and wrong)

Correct form is to think of the glove tucking into the chest as the body moves forward. The glove rotates thumb upward. I have heard it described like grabbing a pole and pulling it into the body.

The "old" way tends to cause the body to open up early and promote "pulling off".
