This is not an official proposal (yet).  $100 million shortfall for fiscal 2017 for Fairfax County Schools.  The discussion includes cutting ALL HS sports and activities.  From what I saw on the local news this morning, $10 million saved cutting sports and $11 million saved cutting activities.

Agreed.  Our school board pulled something similar a few years ago.  A proposal was put forth to have a pay-to-play sports at the MS and HS level.  It never made it out of the committee.

Have to admit it's gonna be tough to make up a $100 million deficit.  I see a tax increase coming.

Make no mistake: there will be cuts. May not be in athletics, but there will be cuts, as well as rev gen efforts (I'm waiting for school naming rights).

You suggesting were could have Coca-Cola HS in West Springfield?  Do they have to change from the Spartans to the Polar Bears?  Colors have to be Red and White for sure!

Can't let them stock the vending machines though.

I'm sure there will be a Koons HS somewhere.

If the Fairfax County Schools are facing deficits, it's a Chief Financial Officer that needs to be cut; not sports.

Kinda what I was thinking!  NoVa is the prime beneficiary of all of the gov't spending that has occured over the last several years.  Not to mention, Fairfax County is one of the wealthiest counties in the Commonwealth.  Makes zero sense.

The big budget drivers: revenue from property vs. costs associated with county growth (safety, health, etc.). Population continues to grow at a faster rate than revenue from property value. Property value rate is starting to recover a bit, but not at pre-bank crisis levels.

I don't get the statement that the broad, national economic recovery hasn't hit FFX. But the huge revenue source, property, is not keeping pace with the costs associated with population growth.
