Our freshmen son called today and told us he made the college baseball team after six weeks of fall tryouts. What was enlighting is that he and a couple other walk-ons were put on the roster, and 2 or 3 scholarship players were cut. (The coach kept his word by promising our son he would be given a chance to compete) These scholarship players were first year players, and now they are gone. We are learning about college baseball all the time.

Speed2004,
Congratulation to your son for making the team. applaudeThis is just an example that good things do happen to those that “go for it”. I know you are proud, as you should be. It should also send a message to your son that he has to continue to work hard because there is another player in the wings trying to earn “his” roster spot.
Best of luck,
Fungo
Zeke,
In the case of a D-1, the scholarship is good for one year and cannot be taken away just because the coach decides to "cut" a player. I don't know about other divisions. Consider too that many times the "scholarship" might not be a significant amount and would not impact the player if he decided to give it up and transfer. I have seen this happen before and the player actually improves his situation by going to a JUCO where they can get more playing time.
speed2004 ...

Congratulations to your son for all his hard work and desire. The whole "speed" family must be very proud.

Zeke ...

There are many reasons why a scholarship player might be cut, and they don't all occur on the field. Our son's team had some scholarship players cut because of "shennigans" off field, but you wouldn't have known it by talking with our son. He elected to honor the player's privacy and not share information that made the players look "bad", even tho he knew some underlying causes for the cut.
