Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is the difference between a put out and an assist?
Who is credited with what and how are they determined? Thanks in advance to those that choose to enlighten me.

basically, the player that makes a throw (leading to an out) gets the assist. The player who catches that throw and makes the tag or force out gets the put out. Also a player cathcing a fly ball gets a put out I believe.
somehow this all also applies to catchers on strikeouts etc., but someone else needs to help. I forget how that works.

Cathers are credited with a put-out when a batter strikes out. (And as a pitcher's mom, I believe that is totally bogus and the catcher should only be credited with an assist and the pitcher credited with the put-out ...) 
If, however, the ball is "dropped" (e.g., wild pitch or passed ball) on a strike out and the catcher manages to still throw the batter out at first, then the catcher is credited with an assist and the 1st baseman gets the put-out.
In a double play, I believe, the middle player gets credit for a put-out on the first out amd an assist om the second out ... how's that for confusing?

10.10
A putout shall be credited to each fielder who (1) catches a fly ball or a line drive, whether fair or foul; (2) catches a thrown ball which puts out a batter or runner, or (3) tags a runner when the runner is off the base to which he legally is entitled. (a) Automatic putouts shall be credited to the catcher as follows: (1) When the batter is called out for an illegally batted ball; (2) When the batter is called out for bunting foul for his third strike; (Note exception in 10.17 (a) (4)). (3) When the batter is called out for being touched by his own batted ball; (4) When the batter is called out for interfering with the catcher. ) I see I had good reason to ask the question.
So if I understood correctly, all outs would involve a put out?
