My son is graduating in a couple of weeks and has been talking with a local Div II coach. This is a local California school he is going to attend whether he plays baseball or not. The coach sent an e-mail last week telling my son to call him and set up a time to come down to the school and throw a bullpen. Is this legal under NCAA regulations? I just want to make sure and not take any chances with losing eligibility.

TR is right as usual, and a workout at D-2 schools is a very normal thing. Frequently a head coach hasn't seen a prospect live so it's a very important time (well duh...).

My son plays at a D-2 and says that kids can be sufficiently impressive at the workout to earn an offer, but he's also seen kids bomb and their chances melt.

My wife and I likely set a record for selfish prayers while watching my son's workout a couple years ago. While the head coach set us at ease afterwards (he looked at my wife and winked and said "he did well mom, we want to get him here"), normally actual offers come later. We didn't know the protocol, but stayed out of the way and sat in the dugout or stands while my son was down in the bullpen throwing. Nervously anxious doesn't begin to describe enduring that session.

Good luck. It's a wonderful opportunity for your son!
I know the feeling about nervous!! My son just went to a JUCO tryout on Saturday and all the parents stayed back and chatted with each other, it was evident when each of our son's was "doing" something. Conversation was broken off by that person, and our necks were craning to see better.

When the coach was talking to the players (he didn't address any parents at all), we were all deathly silent hoping to hear what he was saying.

He's got two more of these things scheduled so far, plus the Perfect Game Showcase on the 15th and 16th. I just hope I can live through it all and he gets that long awaited phone call :-)
