I am new to High School baseball as I was not blessed with the athletic talent that my son has so pardon my ignornace here. My son made his JV team and and they use him to exclusively pitch. He pitches almost every game as a closer and has an exceptional record so far with a couple of tough saves so he is doing really well in that role. My concern is whether this is also a disadvantage to him. He is a very good fielder, has primarily played SS, 2B, CF on his select teams and very athletic, his weakness is batting and typically falls middle of the road on team stats- this is something that we have worked on for years that he has never been consistently good or bad at. When he has played a position, which has only been a couple of innings this season, he has played 3B. My question is should we worry about him pitching only at such a age (14)? Or just enjoy his success so far as a pitcher and "roll with it."

First welcome to the best source of HS baseball information anywhere. Enjoy the success and work on his hitting in the off-season if he wants to play the field. My son is a pitcher but also plays in the field when not pitching. Why?, because he can hit. There is no better advice for a player who wants to play in the field than “if you can hit they will find a spot for you on the line up card”. He has lots of players on his team that pitch only (6), and there are two pitchers who also play in the field. Personally I like the fact that he plays two ways, as it has given him more options for college baseball. He is a Jr and I am still not sure which way he will go in college. He will have a much better idea after this summer, but he has teams looking at him for both reasons.
A mediocre batting average might be okay for the middle infield but not corner infield positions. That's competing against high schoolers. As for moving on to college, he should one of the top hitters on the team. Otherwise, let him concentrate on pitching.

My own son (secretly) was a darn good hitter whom they never let hit. First h.s. AB he hit it off the wall. I think the second or third he hit a home run. He had very few at bats after that but for good reason, as they knew he was going to a pitcher-only in college. Be realistic.

I guess my main concern is if 14 1/2 is too young of an age to concentrate on pitching only. He does get to play SS, 3B on his travel team but is still primarily a pitcher. I would just hate to have him labeled too young. Again he is a very good pitcher and is the first kid they go to in tough situations which he usually gets them out of. I am new to HS sports- this is all a foreign land to me!
