I just received a call from a school I am interested in. They did not make an offer but instead asked me to apply first to see if I can qualify academically to the school and then they would make the offer. They already know what my grades, SAT, and ACT scores are and have said this should be more than acceptable. Does this sound right? I have teamates that have received offers from big D-1 programs without the schools ever asking for grades...

Were they DI schools or DII and other, that called before 7/1?

Based on text message traffic among the members of a travel team I'm familiar with, D1 coaches still make calls on July 1. Players who have already verbally committed may get called only by the college they have committed to. Among the non-committed, the top players got calls from high profile schools, with others getting calls from somewhat less powerful schools.

Interestingly, some players got calls from schools with which there had been no previous communication.

My older son had a couple that wanted him to apply but they had limited enrollment with no override for athletics. These were smaller schools. I believe the rule would be limited enrollment or stringent academic requirements. Other than that never heard of it. I have heard some want you to apply and talk to financial aid before they will make offer so they know what they have to give and what you are getting other places.
Most of the kids I know who received calls July 1 received one or two from colleges they had really had a relationship with - attended camp, one on one conversation before this date, etc. A couple I know, my own kid included, received "interest" calls - not offers.

I'm thinking that most coaches are in Georgia now at the 18u tournament. They'll be there for the 17u tournament through July 12.

Let's see what happens then.
Coaches don't call on July 1 to make offers, if they wanted a player badly enough they would have made an offer already.
July 1 is for many the first time to talk to a coach on the phone. Establishing the beginning of a relationship for many, or just saying hello to someone you already know. No one is going to give you an offer if they never spoke to you and I am not sure that I would want my player to "accept on the first date" so to speak. Even if dream school, it is very very important that you get to know the person who you will be spending about 90% of your time in college with.
Also understand your sons have never done this, they have 100's of times. They are courting you and do know the honeymoon ends in many cases the day you set foot on their field. Also the player should not just be talking with whoever is recruiting them, but the HC as well. You have got to get to talk to them too. JMO
My son had actually been in communication with the school he signed with a yeer before July 1. they didn't call him they called us to introduce themselves.
