Assuming you are swimming 'freesytle', keep your elbows high on the recovery of each stroke to minimize the stress on your shoulders. Keeping the elbows high recruits the large muscles in your back, chest, and core.

I suggest joining a Masters class as they usually have a coach that will watch your stroke. Just like anything else, practicing poor mechanics can create issues. Masters classes are usually only $25/month and they welcome all levels of athletes to join them.

But, I'm like you. I feel its a great workout and I've always felt if done properly, can benefit throwing.
