Don't dare ask this, you know 'Out there...' Son got his first evaluation from a Champions Showcase invitation only deals. My son has always been athletic, always made the teams, but not the star. Some of his teammates were bigger, faster sooner, coached by their Dad’s, and thus their names are better known. But where their progression has slowed in the past few years, my son having learned to apply himself, is still growing, so he is still progressing a lot every year, but his name isn’t as known, so to speak. I am glad for this evaluation, because for the most part is untainted by politics... And I think it’s pretty good. The thing is, I am not sure what the Tools category ‘Instincts’ means exactly??? My son caught during this showcase game for 15 innings. (6 catchers, 6 teams, 8 pitchers to catch for…) So there were things that he does better like blocking (that would be fielding correct?) but he scored higher on arm strength and accuracy, than fielding. I am thinking this is because of the amount of ‘unknown pitchers & how they pitch’ made his anticipation of where the ball would break and feet coordination a little different than usual? I would think that this anticipation would be the ‘instincts’ they are talking about??? But he scored the highest in this ‘Instinct’ Tools category, so I am confused. My husband is a 6’8” basketball guy, so he is not patient (still sulking that my son’s first love is baseball) with these type questions.

To the Mom’s that have college baseball players, does anyone have a son that caught that wasn’t the home run star who went on to college, that wouldn’t mind sharing how your son’s evaluations/experiences were when he was a high school Jr/Sr and your insight as to what the tools categories/scores (he was graded on a scale of 1-6) really mean? Is there a Tool that is more important than another??

Thanks,

Well, from a basketball lovin' girl, tell your husband to get over it! Baseball truly is the best! Wink

I have some theories on instinct, but since I'm not positive, I'll wait and see what the others have to say.

One thing that I've learned is that everyone has different opinions regarding what's important. Even when referring to a particular position, I think you might get a variety of answers. I would suspect that different coaches might value things a little differently too.

I do think that as a HS Jr/Sr, you've got to be able to "perform" whether that be in a game or a showcase situation. It's showtime! It sounds like your son performed very respectably and has lots of potential. If he has exact questions about the scoring, it might benefit him in a couple of ways for him to call the guys at Champions and discuss exactly what the scoring of each tool means.
Okay, I don't have a definition of instincts but based on all my years of listening to the 'guys who know all' out there, I believe it refers to a player's ability to know what to do in any given situation in the game, whether it be his fielding (where to go with the ball when it isn't a 'given') or hitting (going to the plate with a plan and hitting to the situation, not just going for the fence). In other words, basically he just has an instinct for the way the game should be played at any given time during the game.

Did that make sense?

Lafmom- That's a good idea, I asked my son if he knew what it meant for sure and told him he should call the name on the eval sheet to make sure he had a clear understanding of his strengths & weaknesses, Thanks. Hubby is coming around. Son got contacted by the EKU coach that was working with the catchers at the showcase, invited him to come down for a prospect day. I am flying home from business trip day before can't be home in time to get him there the night before, so hubby assured me that he would take him... without stressing anyone out. If the walls could talk, LOL

FutureBack Yes that does make sense, thanks
