Hello All:

My son is a 5'6", 100 lbs HS sophomore, with plenty of growing still left to do (wears a size 13.5 shoe). He wants to attend a showcase to see where he stands, but I am very realistic about his skill set. Don't get me wrong, right now he's a better than average fielder, but speed and power are an issue, although he is still developing. he's a physical "late bloomer" just like his dad.

What minimum benchmarks should he be reaching in terms of velocity, general strength, and, foot speed, before attending a showcase becomes a waste of everyone's time?

Personally, I would stay away from larger more recognized showcases until he has one or two under his belt. There is a thread about Pro Day showcases, which happens to be the first showcase my son attended, as as the poster indicated not many scouts or recruiters will show up at these.

Next Level Showcases in Tallahassee Fl, and Atlanta Ga. are excellent as well and more of an instructional showcase.

After you have a couple under your belt then try a PG event like the Underclassmen, you can attend this one through your Junior year of HS.

I would think velocity should be in the 80's depending on position and running low 7's or better.
